Right?! I remember a time when I used to agree with him ALL THE TIME and found his reviews to be some of the most well-written and considerate takes out there. And then he came to the NY Times, and it's all been downhill since then.

Of course Jesse Green hates it lol. That man is a complete idiot.

Although in that scenario, Moon arguably benefitted from being in the show that was a stronger contender than the others in her category. Days of Wine and Roses, Lempicka, and The Notebook weren't nominated for Best Musical. Meanwhile, Gayle Rankin probably suffered from the Cabaret revival not living up to its acclaim from London.

Maleah won in an incredibly weak year and was up against:
She was also in the most-liked show of the above nominees and the only Best Musical nominee.
In another year, Maleah might have been lucky to even be nominated.

Review | ‘Boop! The Musical’: Boop-Oop-a-Don’t

"Jasmine Amy Rogers plays Betty in stylized, exaggerated fashion — full of baby-voiced catchphrases and cartoonish mannerisms. She’s committed and cute, but understandably cannot replicate the surreal proportions and charisma of her animated counterpart. So when New Yorkers instantly recognize her as the real Betty Boop, it’s unconvincing.
The book by Bob Martin (“The Drowsy Chaperone”) attempts to reframe Betty as a modern feminist figure, but the messaging is muddled and superficial. The plot is thin, the pacing sluggish, and the emotional arc barely registers. There are scattered references to cartoon lore — including Betty’s early days as a dog — and jazz greats like Cab Calloway, but they land as shallow nods.""
He is so tedious. The fact that the lead New York Times critic does not know how to suspend his disbelief when reviewing a musical is truly pathetic

Apologies - I mixed up publications. Long day. But point stands. Pathetic.

Not really understanding your point. Audra has six Tony’s, she doesn’t need a 7th and her performance is not blowing folks outta their socks, it’s been a mixed response. Politically Nicole got into some hot water. Jasmine is a breath of fresh air and crafting something that has never been performed on a Broadway stage, the other two can’t say the same. Shes giving a triple threat performance. I think people will honor it.

Yeah, none of that is true and trying to take away such an accomplishment from a young, beautiful, woman of color making her Broadway debut is exactly what I would expect with someone with your condition. Absolutely repugnant. Maleah Joi Moon is a star and if you had bothered to see Hells Kitchen, it would have been obvious. Stop talking about things you know nothing about.

Of course it will. Are you one of those salty haters who thought the show was going to get panned and are now disappointed? lol
Boop will win best choreo easily, Jasmine might win Best Actress, it'll get nominations for Best Musical, Costume Design, Original Score at the very least. And you think they're closing before the Tonys?
Ensemble1698878795 said: "Politically"
There are sooooo many moderate Tony voters. I don't think Nicole's social media interaction will change a single voter's mind.

After these reviews, I don't think it'll have a problem staying around for 2 months...
Fascinating to me that so many reviewers are taking the silly plot so literally. How can the people of NYC recognize her?! How can a 2D character become a 3D person?! Because it’s an old-fashioned musical comedy taking a cue from inane 30s cartoons, that’s why. (Not saying the book doesn’t have its flaws, but I knew people would be reviewing this like it’s Our Town or something.) Just enjoy the panacea of the sparkle and the tapping - that’s what this is, and they crush it. Glad Jasmine is getting her deserved raves!

Maleah is excellent and it was a weak year in the category in comparison to this one. Both can be true. It was between her and Kelli O'Hara, who starred in a divisive and closed show. The other 3 nominees were fortunate just to be there. Why this revisionist history?

It had the second-lowest average ticket price on Broadway last week and likely lost money each week of previews.
I don't have any expectation it will close pre-nominations.
But these reviews are not money raves (especially the one review that does still carry some weight) and the show needs a big lift. We've seen bigger lifts this season (hello, robots) but nothing about this show is a sure bet.

Tony voters don’t always vote on merit. It’s HIGHLY political. Regardless, I don’t think Audra or Nicole got raves like this across the board. We will all see on June 8th.

What bigger lift could a show get than every single critic saying the star is the future of Broadway? Sleep on it all you want but some people would love to go back in time see Streisand, Midler, LaPone etc in their debuts

Does Betty Boop Exist in Three Dimensions?
https://www.vulture.com/article/theater-review-betty-boop-broadway-musical.html
"Unsteadiness in premise can be covered for by verve of execution, which Boop! does find here and there. Mitchell is more committed to choreography than many commercial Broadway directors, and here, he’s using Betty’s early-20th-century origins as a way to explore bodies-as-geometry à la Busby Berkeley. The second act opens with a chase sequence in which the ensemble flips around in costumes that are half color, half black-and-white.
If her character remains obscure, at least Rogers has the kind of charm and ease with physical comedy (she’s found a way of making her limbs hand-drawn and noodly) that makes you resort to old-fashioned forms of praise: a cutup, a laugh riot, a real pistol."

That may be true, but I'm also confident in saying that this is the musical that's getting the best "word of mouth" reviews of the season from people who went into it knowing nothing about it. I've had at least 10 friends over the last few weeks see the show and come out saying "Wait I kinda loved it!" I won't be surprised if we see an uptick in sales now that there are reviews to back up those takes that normal people are leaving the theater with.

I think Buena Vista could give it a run for Choreography….
