Have you seen Buena Vista Social Club? Because if you think Death Becomes Her has a better chance at winning than it does, I have to imagine you haven't seen it.

I have and I loved the music! I guess the consensus has it 4th in the odds so it might have a chance! https://www.goldderby.com/odds/combined-odds/tony-awards-nominations-2025-predictions/
So, the Original Broadway Cast Recording of BOOP! is coming soon. The cast has already recorded it.
DTLI Consensus: With an explosion of color and joy and a strong central performance from Jasmine Amy Rogers, despite a sketchy book, this new musical is a BOOP-oop-a-doozy.
9 positive, 4 mixed (including the NYT), 2 negative.

And I totally agree with him re: BOOP. A big question mark - none of it makes any sense (not that a fantasy HAS to) and not much of it is entertaining. Wan choreography, strange, cringey characters, midling songs. Jasmine is fine and Ainsley is a joy and so is Erich. But to waste Faith Prince and give that American Idol person such a focus is all a such crime. And did I mention that PLOT???? Lots of flash and dazzle and not much meat.

Those predictions have your predicted winner, Jasmine Joy Rogers, in 6th place, so why are you putting stock into them?
To me, these reviews are certainly good, but not good enough to get a best musical nomination this season and keep this show alive a bit longer in NY.
What I hope for this show is, 1) it marks the start of a brilliant career for Jasmine, and 2) it has a SEUSSICAL-type trajectory once the licensing rights are acquired. It should be a big, fat hit in schools and community theaters alike.
For now, though, the death knell just got a lot closer.

i wish Green wasnt as curmudgeonly and cranky as he has been lately, but none of what he writes about BOOP is wrong or misplaced or even overtly harsh. He seems to have enjoyed it but couldnt get over the HUH? of it all. Which is frustrating because as a critic I wish he'd think a little bit more about his job, ie to signal to readers whether they might enjoy it. But its not a pan or an unfair one by any stretch.
These are solid reviews with plenty of pull quotes. The marketing team has what to work with and I wish them well.

Isn’t Nicole, technically, new blood? I mean has she won a Tony?

I actually thought Green way overstepped the mark here. Saying the Fleischer family did this only as a cheap cash grab is a wild accusation and pretty gross imo

Audra has six Tony’s, she doesn’t need a 7th and her performance is not blowing folks outta their socks, it’s been a mixed response.Politically Nicole got into some hot water. Jasmine is a breath of fresh air and crafting something that has never been performedon a Broadway stage, the other two can’t say the same. Shes giving a triple threat performance. I think people will honor it.”
The only only place I hear mixed reviews on Audra’s performance is on this board. The show (and her performance) got rave reviews across the board. And that thing was Nicole was ridiculous and lasted 5 minutes. No one (but the people on this board) even remember it. I barely remember (or care about it) myself. It also should have nothing to do with whether she gets a Tomy or not.

Now come on Jan, Nicole is a pop musician. New as in undiscovered. She’s not new blood.

Industry folks are saying Lea Salonga’s Roses Turn outshines Audra's. Trust that it’s not just this board. Remember, Tony voters are also voting towards their own interests. Y’all really don’t like to make space for new stars. Noted.

As someone who just saw Lea do this literally yesterday, I very much disagree. Audra's version is a fully developed performance. Lea sounds good, but there's not much more to it than that. Also, I'm pretty sure they've lowered the key for her substantially.

Happy with the reviews. Happy for the show and everyone involved. I hope this bumps up the box office and it sticks around.

Not true. I love to make room for new stars (hello Helen J Shen). It’s just that I adored both Audra and Nicole. Audra was better IMO, but, Nicole’s singing blew me away.

LOL. Absolutely no way Lea outshines Audra. Lea is a wonderful actress/performer when it comes to certain dramatic ballads, but her abilities are limited outside of that, in my opinion.

Industry folks are saying …??!? That is such crap. Which industry folks? Your source? I know we’re living in a time of “alternative facts”, but this is ridiculous ! And, without question, the dumbest thing I’ve on this board in some time. And industry folks agree!🙄
Hold it! “Y’all really don’t like to make space for new stars. Noted” I could actually be dumber. Not because it reveals your agenda but because it’s categorically untrue.
You’re making things up again, Arnold. Get some sleep — or you’ll be a wreck in homeroom tomorrow.
Where can I hear Lea Salonga’s Rose’s Turn :p?

Green's consistent sin for me is that he is just a dull writer nowadays.

The title is certainly negative, but the review doesn't really match it. He only seems to have positive things to say about Rogers, the score, the lyrics, the book, the dancing. His objection seems to be against the show's existence...
This is what surprises me:
"David Foster’s music, in a jazzy brass-and-reeds Cy Coleman vein, pops nicely; the lyrics, by Susan Birkenhead, are far better crafted than you dare hope these days. To the extent it is possible to enjoy the story’s themes — the power of music, the way color comes into your life when you love — it is often because she encapsulates them so amusingly. I laughed out loud at her show-off rhyme of “It girls” and “spit curls.”
But none of that explains or justifies the show’s existence. Nor, despite enormous effort, can the book by Bob Martin"
It seems like all of those, plus the star and dancing he also calls excellent, are enough reason for a show to exist. But that's me.
I just have to say about the person who shall remain nameless in this thread. They were wrong about the reviews and they were outed as being a complete liar.
All in all a good day all around. :)
