yankees1253, since the strike is legal, all the mayor can do is offer to mediate, and if one of the parties turn he offer down, he can't do anything. He's offered twice, and was turned down twice by Local One. The League accepted his offers.
The Grinch SHOULD be saved. Its non-league producers have a non-expired contract with Local One that is totally independent of the contract currently under dispute.
So what about the Macys Thanksgiving Parade? Will Legally Blonde (a strike affected show) or Xanadu and Mary Poppins (shows not affected by the strike) still be able to perform?
"Chicago is it's own incredible theater town right there smack down in the middle of the heartland. What a great city! I can see why Oprah likes to live there!" - Dee Hoty :-D
Well, there go the Cyrano tickets my folks had been holding onto for months.
"If there is going to be a restoration fee, there should also be a Renaissance fee, a Middle Ages fee and a Dark Ages fee. Someone must have men in the back room making up names, euphemisms for profit."

They're supposed to all be fine to perform- apparently Blonde will have to rent their props and will not be in costume, and Xanadu/Poppins will not be affected.
LeoBloom2, a big LOL to you - that made me laugh very hard. Although really, you should've backed out of the room with an "oh sh*t" look on your face...
from the information i've had (which i'm sure is not the whole story) i've been behind local one i support their reasons for striking but this is getting ridiculous. As a stagehand you have to have at least some respect for theatre and broadway and if i knew i was the reason for certain show's that have had a lot of history and could have been on for another few years to potentially close I would feel just awful. This is an obscene amount of money that will be lost you'd think they could come to some sort of compromise at this point. I honestly don't know what ot think anymore.

> The producers should DEFINITELY make a donation to BC/EFA after
I am a stagehand, and I am now out of a job until at least 11/25. But I will personally donate 50% of my week's strike benefit payment BC/EFA this week. I care. The producers? I doubt it.
This is really upsetting. I wish I could just get refunds for the two shows in December and get it over with. I'll just go to see off Broadway from now on.
Yeah, I heard it was the League that walked out . . .not Local 1. Nevertheless, to be honest (no matter how optimistic I am) -- I'm pissed at everyone now! I mean, involved in this situation!
I stand behind making your points and doing it for one week -- but THIS IS RIDICULOUS! We're talking about history, NYC, a way of life, dreams, goals, and business and charities!!! The League needs to get their heads out of . . . you know where . . . and be f&#king reasonable; instead of walking out like babies to pout! Geez!!! And Local 1, could you all please agree to some sort of COMPROMISE instead of holding on with a death grip to every little thing? [Although, I get that you have to do what you have to do]. I'd just like this to end, today, if not sooner.
I don't know all the deepest issues . . . and don't claim to. But, please, everyone needs to give up a bit. Both sides!
From what I'm hearing, the League walked out around 9PM. But they were able not only to agree to cancel performances for an entire week AND to get a press release out to the press JUST in time for the 11PM news cycle.
wow, i was really hoping for negotiations to go through. i had tickets to spamalot this coming saturday =[. I don't know what went on at negotiations but i really, really think Local One is acting stuck up, immature & just plain demanding. Well, now John Lloyd Young doesn't have a real closing performance. great. Updated On: 11/19/07 at 12:05 AM

"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

I still can't believe everything's cancelled THROUGH next weekend! Don't the stagehands/Local One realize that if The Union and producers let them strike through this week, the shows won't be back up any time too soon? That means no paychecks for the stagehands, really bad business for buses, trains, airplanes, restaurants, hotels, New York City as a whole...
"I mean, sitting side by side with another man watching Patti LuPone play Rose in GYPSY on Broadway is essentially the equivalent of having hardcore sex." -Wanna Be A Foster.
"Say 'Goody.' Say 'Bubbi.'" ... "That's it. Exactly as if it were 'Goody.' Now I know you're gonna sing 'Goody' this time, but nevertheless..."

Which is exactly what the League want. They're the ones who cancelled this week, not the union.
Yeah, trust me, I would rather be back at work this week. But the loss to me is about a thousand bucks, take-home pay. What's the loss for Wicked, Jersey Boys, Curtains, etc.?
The union has been warning us for over a year that we were going to be attacked, and to be prepared for a long work stoppage. We are.
Exactly. They're trying to make Local One look like the villains here, but seeing as how the League walked out of the talks and took the step of canceling the week's shows--indicating they're not even going to try solving this within the week--they bear 100% of the responsibility for this mess right now.
I think that both sides are at fault, and neither wants to compromise. I don't really fault the league for canceling for the entire week rather than taking it on a day by day basis. That gives people a chance to rearrange plans.
Edited because a college graduate should know how to spell "chance"
