DTLI Consensus: Let a magnificent performance from Carrie Coon crawl under your skin in this slow yet prophetic mid-'90s Tracy Letts play.
9 positive (including the NYT), 5 mixed.

The Queen speaking the truth. Anyway, I think Tony voters will have the toughest time choosing between Coon and Manville. Great problem to have in Broadway.
2 week extension just announced.
Coon is fantastic in this but it's still Manville's to lose. We do not see Smallwood being nominated for his role however.

Coon, Manville, Metcalf (LBRR), Squibb, Edibiri, Henson, Emond, Byrne, O’Hara, and Flood would be eligible.
This is turning into the Mother-Off of 2026.

Agree! Manville and the chair that’s all
It’s Manville’s year. Coon will win her Tony for August: Osage County!

From playing the tightly-wound, corset-wearing matriarch on The Gilded Age to smoking a crack pipe in a dreary motel room on the outskirts of Oklahoma City, Carrie Coon isn’t just having a moment; she’s blowing it up.
Director David Cromer (Dead Outlaw, Meet the Cartozians) keeps the play’s focus tight and the performances brisk within the confines of scenic designer Takeshi Kata’s oppressive motel room-turned bunker. But it’s Coon and Smallwood’s performances that make us question how far we’ll go to not feel alone, regardless of the outcome.
“You’re never really safe,” says Smallwood's character. “Not anymore, not on this planet. We’ll never be safe again.”

The was a giant "meh" for me. The second act is definitely more interesting than the first. This is the first Tracy Letts play I've seen that I haven't really enjoyed. I typically love his work, but BUG just fell flat for me. I don't fault the cast, and Coon is terrific, but the play itself wasn't my cup of tea.
Never thought this played very well on stage, but Friedkin's film adaptation is absolutely fantastic.

Went tonight.
Somehow even better then when I saw it at Steppenwolf, more claustrophobic and disturbing. Michael Laurence was on as Jerry for the first time tonight and nailed it.
Carrie Coon is absolutely getting TONY nominated
would really like to see Ian Duff on for "Peter Evans". Does Smallwood have any known scheduled absences?

As was posted on Reddit, the matinee yesterday started at 2:35 due to a technical issue with the set. With no phones, it was an interesting experience waiting.
Coon is definitely getting Tony nominated. More mixed on the play itself. Some good stuff and scenes but it didn’t all click. Lot of laughter too but don’t know if it was nervous or incredulous.
I love Carrie Coon and Tracy Letts, but I didn’t love Bug. I think a lot of people on stage and backstage are doing good work, but somehow, it didn’t feel as tense to me as I wanted. In a way, where it all went seemed more inevitable than suspenseful. And I don’t know if that’s in the writing or the acting or the directing. I can’t point to anything that felt less than well executed, but it didn’t grab me. I enjoyed myself. I just wish it hit harder.

Finally was able to get the online rush ticket yesterday, all thanks to the frigid temps i assume. The choice was between The Disappear or Bug. I'm very pleased I went with Bug. Carrie Coon of course is impeccable, but Namir Smallwood's portrayal of "quiet" psychosis with the 2nd act full unraveling was absolutely incredible. Maybe it helped that I got a rush ticket in the first row and was able to see clearly every face expression, but I was fully engrossed in this play.
