I've always loved Gypsy. However I also love JCS, No, No, Nanette, West Side Story, and several others. It's a very hard thing to write... but when you do it correctly, it soars.
I defiantely want to add Candide for its energy and WSS for its thrilling bolt of adrenaline you get from hearing it live.
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."
To Kill A Mockingbird
However, Julian did remind me of the fabulousness that is known as the JCS overture. Gotta love those horns & guitars. They don't make 'em like that anymore...
I think we need to come to an agreement on exactly what an overture is. The openings of Saigon, Les Miz, Titanic and Phantom don't strike me as overtures.
That being said, my favorites:
Funny Girl The Producers Millie The Jerry Herman hattrick.
I find the overture to The Light in The Piazza really stunning. I don't really have a favorite, as that kind of thing can change almost daily when there is so much material to chose from - but currently, I'm pretty darned impressed with Piazza.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!"
Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!
i had a great cd called THE OVERTURES OF JULE STYNE and i loved loved loved it. i think some drunken satyr used it as a coaster at one of my parties and ruined it. i want to vote for THE KING & I, however. that overture gives me goose bumps and i'm giddy with anticipation.
and we all know there's NOTHING worse than a drunnken satyr! Well, perhaps one who's in rehab....

"You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays. I don't know about you, but I'd like to make today worth remembering." --Harold Hill from The Music Man
"For me, THEATRE is an anticipation, an artistic rush, an emotional banquet, a jubilant appreciation, and an exit hopeful of clearer thought and better worlds."

I think the Overtures or Opening Numbers for the following shows are really memorable or set the tone of the entire shows well...
Gypsy Phantom of the Opera Tom Wait's Woyzeck Lion King Jesus Christ Superstar Evita Kiss of the Spider Woman Kiss Me, Kate Avenue Q Into the Woods West Side Story Big River Caroline, or Change Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Ironically, I really love the DRS overture but loathe the Full Monty one, and they're by the same guy Updated On: 9/13/05 at 02:27 PM

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. That's the Vince Vaughn of Broadway overtures. I keep half expecting to have someone stand up from the pit and scream 'F*** you' when its all over. I dunno, maybe thats just me...
