Didn't Elaine get a special Tony for her liberty special?

Margo, I don't remember if it was the Tony's or the Emmy's when Elaine wouldn't leave the stage during her speech? "I've waited __ years for this and I'm not leaving now..."
Do you recall?

Audra McDonald, without a doubt!
Tony voters need to learn to give credit where credit is due! Come on! Five broadway shows, and not ONE award! What are they thinking?!?

TomMonster, I am pretty sure that was the Emmys. She also apologized to the other people in her category, but said she wasn't too sorry because she wanted the Emmy. It was a pretty amusing speech.
"I hope you're all happy, keeping Alan off the team. Couldn't you, for once, open your minds and hearts and hear something that he couldn't see? I, for one, am glad that Alan is blind, so he can't see what, I am so sad to say, you can't hear." -Jerri Blank

I'll also join those who said Julie Andrews. They should have given her a special Tony.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

It was her speech at the Tonys that went on so long that they finally had to cut her off her mic and go to commercial. Her category wasn't even broadcast at the Emmys that year.
Under Tony rules, the award for Special Theatrical Event goes to the producers and not to the performers, writers, directors etc..... But for AT LIBERTY, given Stritch and her life were the whole show, one of the producers gave her an award.

Mano?! The guy turned in a great performance, but one performance an amazing career does not make. Mano cannot be mentioned in the same context as Julie Andrews.

kyle.-Audra McDonald has won four Tonys, if I'm not mistaken.
Julie Andrews definitley should have a Tony, it's suprising that she doesn't have (at least) one.
I'm not sure who else.

Actually, Kyle, I thought it was very funny.
And HOW COULD I HAVE FORGOTTEN ABOUT RICHARD KIND!
Sorry for yelling, but geeeez....
Oh wait, has he ORIGINATED a role on Broadway? (Since the replacement category is gone--well never was???)

Totally Marin and Julie Andrews. It is safe to say I think that the days of Andrews having a chance at it is just slim unless in achievement or something. Marin, I feel badly that she has done great things with various sorts of roles yet slipped past everytime without getting one. Very unusual IMO

John McMartin
Several of the people who've been mentioned have never originated a role in a Broadway production and thus have never been eligible or have been eligible only once.
One of the most bizarre things is that Boyd Gaines has three, something that seems to amaze even him.

I agree about John McMartin. "Sweet Charity" and others...we always forget how many famous characters he's created in the theatre!
Julie Andrews turned down her nomination for "Victor/Victoria" because the committee did not nominate anyone else in show. She was pretty much a lock for that year's award. Gotta love her for that!

The year Andrew would have gotten her Tony was the year she boycotted and therefore lost it. I say it's her own fault.
Amy Spanger, Mary Testa and Carolee Carmello are my faves so far.
Tim Curry
Patti Cohenour
Nancy Opel
Harry Groener
Jeanine Tesori needs one, even though she's not a performer.
Same with Graciela Daniele. 10 nominations, no wins.
And Babs needs to come back and win a Tony for an actual performance. None of this honorary Tony crap.

I wouldn't say "boycotted" so much as declined her nomination. No one else connected with her show was nominated. It's a little severe to say its her own fault when I doubt her decision was motivated by an ego in need of bolstering. There was no guarantee she would've won. Upsets, as we've noted the last few years, are not impossible. But she's my childhood hero, so I'm biased.
