Because the original poster was born in 2002.

First person that always pops in my head is Heather Laws as Sally Bowles. Absolutely stunning. Kevin Cahoon as Frank-n-Furter was excellent as well.

I know you're all gonna kill me after I say this-
When Stephanie Block was in the national tour of Wicked I thought Jenna Leigh Green was a good understudy.

A stand-by is higher paid than an understudy and usually a little more well-known or with better credits, but for the purposes of this board, stand-bys can be counted.
Dean: Can I tell you something? Lorraine: That depends on what it is. Dean: I think you're really really pretty. Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.

Matthew Scott went on for his second time as Bob Gaudio in Jersey Boys today. Every bit as good as Daniel Reichard in the role. Having seen Daniel a month ago...his understudy amazed me and is one of the best understudies I've seen as of late. Kudos to Matthew!

Jenna Leigh Green for Elphaba in Wicked. She is the best elphaba and she was only the understudy and blows so many elphies away. Loved her performance.

A standby and an understudy are not the same thing. A standby is never in the show, and an understudy (for musicals, which this thread is mostly about) is in the ensemble.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
