I thik they meant the prior US revivals of Spring Awakening and Follies didn't do well financially

I’ve heard that THE MOTIVE AND THE CUE may transfer.

OPERATION MINCEMEAT (sophomoric and silly) and CRAZY FOR YOU (dated?) unlikely.

If SUNSET BLVD transfers, I hope it does with Nicole. She seems quite essential to its great reviews and success.

it would be a gift to have SONDHEIM’S OLD FRIENDS on Broadway.

I was told (while attending a performance at its Bridge Theatre) that GUYS AND DOLLS will not transfer. IMHO, there’s nothing special about it aside from the gimmicky immersive staging, and we’ve seen how that worked out for HERE LIES LOVE. It’s just the same good old reliable G&D. The innovative staging is diverting and fun, for sure, but it’s still a dated show.

As for the imminent transfer of CABARET, I didn’t find the London staging deserving of a $20 million plus reconstruction of the August Wilson Theatre to replicate the revival’s venue. The London Kit Kat Club was cramped, the stage was too small. Did Weimar Republic nightclubs have seating on opposite sides of the stage?

As long as shows like Six and & Juliet have success transferring there will be other shows attempting it.  But those shows are not about  specifically British experiences - they use English history or historical theatre to present universal themes - and they smartly used a good American casts for their American productions.

One weakness I see in Operation Mincemeat - even in the UK production - is making the cast the star instead of the show the star.  Idiosyncratic shows need to be able to stand when the cast changes.  Perhaps they need to have a new cast for a NY production?

I also want to point out that Mincemeat has already received rave reviews from Helen Shaw (featured on their website) and Peter Marks...and they are advertising on here as well which I can't recall other west end productions doing recently.

Mincemeat is definitely gonna come to the US at some point. Maybe do an engagement somewhere in North America before going to Broadway. To see if American audiences and critics alike would enjoy it. After seeing it and talking with the creators, they said they really want the show to go to America. So, hopefully, they will get the chance to bring it to the states.

Really? Actual question. I thought prices of flights and accommodation had rocketed sky high since Covid.

Anyway, it was really just a light-hearted remark that came from a place of seething jealousy. Some people manage to see everything.

Well, speaking for myself, it's about personal sacrifice, obsession and choosing life priorities that are probably a bit different from the mainstream. I think my life would be a lot easier (especially in the long-term future) if I didn't have to see these shows, but I just can't help it because I love it so much. I need Bernadette to retire or I'm never going to be able to afford to retire.

"Loving you is not a choice,
It's who I am.

Loving you is not a choice
And not much reason to rejoice,
But it gives me purpose
Gives me voice to say to the world:
This is why I live
You are why I live."

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Production costs in London must be substantially lower or subsidized.

Their number of cast members in plays is insane, sometimes to just cross the stage.

I'm always shocked that NYC producers can afford these transfers.

Yes.  I was referring to the US revivals.  Sorry if I wasn't clear.

The London costs are substantially lower. Rent is cheaper, wages are much lower - many actors barely scraping by near minimum wage. It’s also why many (feels like most) shows seem to be running with so many empty seats each night but still manage to survive. There was a recent media campaign where actors saying it was ‘unfair’ they don’t get paid broadway wages lol. There has to be a middle ground somewhere. NYC costs are obscene. In London people are treated like dirt.

I went in September, it was $650 roundtrip, nonstop.  July is different....it was $1200 when I looked and did not go down.

Is Patriots for sure transferring? This is a show I wanted to see but could not fit in an early preview of when I was in London last spring (used JetBlue points and slept on a friend's couch if anyone asks ...).

If I leave Spotify on long enough to start auto playing I cannot skip Operation Mincemeat songs fast enough. I would be very curious too see how this would be received stateside.

I'm all for Operation Mincement to transfer but two cast members in particular need to be in the transfer:

David Cumming (Charles Cholmondeley)

Jak Malone (Hester Leggett)

I can't imagine anyone else doing their characters...

It's doing well and will probably extend past June 2024.

"

iirc the rumor (on these boards at least) was that Taron Edgerton was going to be the Stanley in theStreetcar transfer, not Paul Mescal.
"

I know Mescal has become predictably big but I am sure he would love to put Broadway on his bucket list. I wish he would consider a 10 week run.

Send over Sunset Blvd please...I would have loved to seen Cabaret again this time with Jake Shears...and the Almedia production of Streetcar was one of the best things I have ever seen

I absolutely want Frecknall’s Streetcar to cross the pond! That woman is becoming a household name and I am so happy she’s finally making her Broadway Debut with Cabaret!

Interestingly the New York Times liked her production of The House of Bernarda Alba, which opened last night, better than any London newspaper

Have their been any conversations about Backstairs Billy transferring? There's a market for British royalty stories in America and Penelope Wilton & Luke Evans have decent amount of star power.

Fairly mixed response to it in the UK.  I thought it was fine, but nothing special.

It's not selling very well even in London, so unless they recast it with Judi Dench and Colin Firth it doesn't stand a chance

This is hair-splitting-adjacent, but it's pretty tough to make a Broadway budget work with anything less than 14 weeks (unless it's at a nonprofit), ideally with the option to extend to 20. And then you also have to factor in 4-6 weeks of rehearsals including tech. A Broadway limited run comes close to a half-year commitment.
