Happy trails to PUNCH, Andrew Barth Feldman, Mira Sorvino, Angela Grovey, and James Monroe Iglehart (for now).

Rough for most titles last week, but an okay start for new entries OEDIPUS and TWO STRANGERS.

Does Halloween at all affect turnout for Broadway?  With the holiday landing on a Friday this year leading to the "Halloweekend" of parties and other gatherings, does it affect ticket sales at all?  Is there a historical precedence?

It was a down week definitely but still on par with this time last year and still up from 2023 levels.

I guess it would make sense that WICKED continues to thrive on Halloween...

It's right there.

Great grosses for Ragtime and Chess.

Halloween is a notoriously difficult holiday to sell tickets on.  Same thing goes for movies--the box office is typically quite slow.  And Halloween on the weekend makes it even worse.  I saw many shows offering special Halloween discount codes, etc.  Lots of competition for those entertainment $$.

Agreed -- Halloween, especially falling on a Friday and rolling into the weekend, certainly would have an impact.

Oedipus quite strong out of the gate, just shy of $500k for 4 performances.

Love the momentum continuing for Chess and Ragtime.

And ouch, Rob Lake and The (?) Muppets.......going this weekend, and I don't wish failure on anyone but a $31k take per show for a 7 performance week seems like a disaster in motion.

Yikes for everything except mainstays like Wicked, Death Becomes Her, Lion King, Hamilton.

Time for Six to close up shop and move to an off-Broadway theater? That number. Yikes. They also put out new tickets so maybe they have a stunt cast coming?

Did Brody Grant actually pull in audiences for The Outsiders? Did he have that kind of name recognition and following, that would result in a drop at the box office when he left the cast?

My thought is people wanted to see the original cast. Now that they're beginning replacements, it might be less of a draw

Yeah. There were discounts abound, but really only the shows that have the cult following/costume contest events seemed to do best on Halloween (Beetlejuice, DBH, Mincemeat).

I remain perplexed at how much money Netflix is going/willing to shovel into their ST fire. Same with LIBERATION - having twice the performances of OEPIDUS and only making half the money.

Rob Lake MAGIC is off to a poor start and unfortunately I think it will continue to do poorly because word of mouth is focusing on how little The Muppets actually appear. They are setting families up to be disappointed.

If Netflix can't get people into Stranger Things on "Halloweekend" then I don't know what their gameplan is. Yes, I understand it's an abysmal holiday for Broadway in general, but this would have been the perfect show to eat up all the tourist dollars as folks look for spooky fun. It's obvious that they hope Season 5 is going to miraculously juice this thing...but it just ain't happening. I mean, even the Season 5 trailer had some of its thunder stolen because the Scream 7 trailer debuted on the same day! They are waiting on some magic bullet that just isn't going to arrive.

I'm also highly confused, and disappointed, that the first time The Muppets appear on Broadway they are attached to this amateur hour magic show from someone with no name recognition. The Muppet Studio is usually so much better at handling this IP with care. This is a huge miss (and HOW did no one think to put Statler and Waldorff in one of the boxes?! I mean my god, it's right there!). Word of mouth is not going to be kind and I hope that it doesn't deter the Muppet Studio from trying out stage productions in the future. Movies like The Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island, or The Muppet Movie could be turned into charming and profitable stage shows. We don't need more half baked "guest appearances" please.

That number for Liberation is quite depressing. It was never going to be a big blockbuster, but the script is incredible and I wish they could find a way to get more people in the door. Will easily be one of my top theatergoing experiences of the season when all is said and done.

& Juliet and Hell's Kitchen are probably done this winter. And though the show is incredibly cheap to run, which has protected it, we are now seeing numbers that should prompt SIX producers to potentially look at an Off-Broadway transfer at New World Stages or other midtown venue.

The Rob Lake show is really a baffling case of producing malpractice. The Muppets were always going to be the selling point here- they're beloved cultural icons and Lake's biggest claim to fame to the public is being a quarter finalist on America's Got Talent in 2018. Using the Muppets to get people in the door and then barely showing them was never not going to backfire. If the magic was incredibly impressive, perhaps it would mitigate their absence, but even that doesn't seem to be the case.

It's really surprising that Disney and the Jim Henson Co. would let such iconic and valuable IP be used like this.

If you think it’s an amateur hour magic show, I’m guessing  you haven’t seen it. And if you think he has no name recognition just because YOU have never heard of him, a quick Google search will prove otherwise,

Counterargument:

  • Liberation with Special Guests The Muppets
  • Waiting for Godot with Special Guests The Muppets
  • Oedipus with Special Guests The Muppets
  • Oh, Mary! with Special Guests The Muppets

He is a creative consultant and has designed illusions for multiple Disney shows. Perhaps that is why Disney, who recently shut down their own theme park Muppets attraction, allowed their valuable IP to be used like this.
