Christ almighty... that capacity drop for The Little Prince... Anyone been to the Broadway this week? What's it look like on the inside?

Those numbers for A STRANGE LOOP are abysmal. I know it will get a boost from reviews and nominations, but it remains to be seen how much of a boost those will give it.

Probably will need to win the best musical Tony to have a chance at a longer run.

The plays (outside of the star driven ones) are struggling big time.  I'm guessing Mrs. Doubtfire won't last until September.

When I saw “The Little Prince” a few weeks ago, most of the tickets, including mine, were comps.

I’d be really bitter if I paid any amount of money to see that bizarre, zero-calorie Cirque knockoff

That sharp drop-off for Beetlejuice is not great so soon after its restart. End of spring breaks, maybe? If so, maybe it will perk back up in the summer.

Mrs. Doubtfire MIGHT get some help with its unexpected batch of Outer Critics Circle award nominations, which it can at least advertise with. If McClure gets a Tony nod, that might be enough to boost its chances of surviving.

Grim.

Great boost for A Strange Loop and MJ continues to do awesome numbers as well. As for Paradise Square....dag.

What is going on with Company? All season it's averaged around $800,000 and never fell below $700,000 (except for when Patti was out). It did fine all throughout January and February as other shows really struggled.  Why is it suddenly free-falling in mid-April?

Paradise, off almost two weeks, failed to relaunch. It seems to intrigue almost no one at this point. I’m not an admirer, beyond awe for the indefatigable company, but all of the supposedly commercial elements (Les Miz meets Ragtime) many presumed would drive box office seem not to exist. Quite a miscalculation. I genuinely thought it could become an audience show.

"Little Prince" can't hang on even another week with those numbers, I'd imagine.

It will be interesting to see next week's numbers for "Strange Loop". This past week has been HEAVILY comped and browsing next week there's so so many seats available once they stop papering. So they really are going to need a big boost from reviews.

Overall, not terrible for most shows though, which is always nice to see now.

I think Company has a bit of a niche market or specific theater goer. Those that wanted to see it have and now its trying to get tourists to buy tickets. When given the options they probably go with either something new or something more recognizable. Hoping the Tony nominations and most likely some Tony wins will give it a bit of a boost but honestly I don’t see it surviving past Sept. if even that long.

Yeah I'd agree that Company was always going to be a niche market. The theatre-goer. It's not competing with Aladdin and Wicked. It's an adult musical for adults.

I think the Tony love will give it a boost through the summer. Same with "A Strange Loop." I just don't think people know what that show is yet.

As for Paradise Square, I saw a clip of "Let it Burn" and that got me interested enough to want to see the show. Gorgeous song. If they can do that on some talk shows that should get some interest going.

The Paradise Square grosses are so awful though, I just don't see even Tony nominations etc. bringing that number high enough to make to worthwhile for producers to keep it open. It is hemorrhaging money.

A lot more shows to choose from???  The base of people who love to see Sondheim musicals is peaking??  Just an off week??  I bet a combination of the first two.

I was hoping to put off seeing it until later in the summer / early fall, so I could see as many limited run shows as possible in my first trip to the Great White Way in over two years.  I am now thinking that I am going to have to sacrifice one of those to ensure I get to see it.

On another front, I am wondering whether any show this season is going to make back its investment, other than Six, and the two star driven limited engagements??  Box office grosses for acclaimed, limited runs like Hangmen and The Minutes are poor enough that I suspect full houses for the remainder of their engagements wont be enough.  I can't believe that Mr. Saturday Night or Funny Girl are gonna do it.

Part covid issue ('I don't want to sit with a mask if I am not positive that I am going to love the show or can get good seats for really cheap prices'Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 4/24/22, part pretty dismal year for new musicals.  A Strange Loop will, even with spectacular reviews, still not attract a large audience.  I am actually hoping that -- based on the feedback on this board -- POTUS will be this decade's Agnes of God or A Few Good Men -- which came from nowhere and achieved big success.  Those are both a thousand years old, but I can't think on a lot of cases where that has actually happened: non-musical, no box office attractions, no advance, unknown author, and becomes a big success based on good reviews and great WOM.

I hope I am wr

Sales cliffs like that are typically less mysterious and usually can be chalked up to either 1. they were too bullish and didn't extend their discounts until it was too late or 2. they didn't extend the on sale window until it was too late to properly fill in.

Yes. I have felt since the beginning that this is very much a FUN HOME/GENT'S GUIDE situation. Both those shows would have been big financial failures without those wins. And this is more esoteric than both of those, and not necessarily Tony-friendly depending on the mood of the voters.

This stuff happens with musical revivals without stars (and Patti is not a star to the general ticket-buying public). The good numbers lasted longer than I'd thought. The exact same thing happened with WAR PAINT, FOLLIES, CAROUSEL, PORGY, MISS SAIGON, ON THE TOWN, ANNIE, FIDDLER, and COLOR PURPLE. This is not a tourism show, and much of the New York audience has now seen it and are moving on to other things.

This got a larger opening/pre-opening boost than it would have otherwise because of the timing of Sondheim's death.

It remains to be seen if COMPANY will get much of a bump from Tony noms/wins. Best Revival isn't usually a big money award, but this might come away as the musical with the most wins of the year (if we assume Revival, Director, both Featureds, plus maybe Set, Orch, & Sound).

The post above mulling the lingering impact of Covid on more casual theatergoing - beyond securing seats 2-3 times per year for event shows - is worthy of discussion. I know New Yorkers who still have not (fully) returned to their former patronage and with restrictions lifting aren’t eager to do so. I’ve been 14 times since the reopening - let us bless TDF - but like many here, not typical of the industry’s targeted audience. I don’t see people as eager to try a new show without media profile as they were. Anecdotal evidence is always suspect, mine no exception, but attendance/box office at almost every non musical but Plaza Suite certainly backs up my supposition.

1. How is it not true?

2. How do you happen to have access to Ermengarde's google calendar?

3. Those who live in glass houses might want to consider not throwing stones.

Hogan, that's a pretty rude thing to assume I use Google Calendar. Sutton manages my calendar for me but doesn't do a very good job at it.

In case anyone cares (why on earth should they?), I've seen A STRANGE LOOP at Playwrights Horizons and at the Lyceum. I adore it. I just have doubts about the Tony voters. I'd love to be wrong. Again, not that anyone should care about my personal opinions (or...schedule?), but you may read my thoughts on post 209 here.
