There appears to be a clear decline, and I'm sure it will have an impact on Broadway (in low margin businesses such as much of the hospitality industry even a small decline can have catastrophic impacts on profit), but it's not like it's gone from 100 to 0 so to speak. So I'm still hopeful there will be SOME uplift in Broadway demand over summer.

For what it's worth, there were 313,434 seats sold and/or comped last week vs 328,951 this week, which is a 5% increase (although maybe all the closings could have helped).

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Foreigners aren't coming over this summer. Europeans and Canadians aren't traveling to the US this summer. Maybe Asians are, haven't seen numbers on them, but it's a drastic plunge that likely doesn't aide in any struggling shows.

You would be wrong - as someone who works at a long running Broadway show - 60% of the crowd are tourists from Europe & Canada , most people do not care the least about Trump andpolitics - I’m in the real world - it’s all tourists - same as always and it’s almost end of June - still waiting for what The View told me to come true, again normal people do not care about politics , they are here . I speak to them , nobody is talking about the things MSMBC told you they care about
"

Tell that to all of the hotels and restaurants that are starting to see a decline in business now. And not just NYC, but also Vegas, the Jersey shore, Florida...
"

And you work in tourism ? Face it the TV told you this , I actually work in a place where tourists visit - 6 days a week , it’s just not true , and as far as hotels many people stay out of the city in places like White Plains - because it’s cheaper - I will say this Times Square is dead - the tourists are getting smarter and visiting other places in the NYC and surrounding area, They go to shows and visit other area instead of walking in circles around Times Square
"

Reuters, NPR, the BBC and others have already released reports on the decline on Europeans traveling to the US this summer. I was just down in Cape May, NJ two weekends ago, and the owners of the hotel stated that bookings are down 40% from last year. They typically get a good amount of Canadians booking for the summer. She said this year, the majority of them cancelled their reservations.

What an obnoxious post filled with lies. I could post a lot of links but I’m not doing your homework for you. I suggest you google “foreign tourists avoid NYC” and you will see all the many news stories about this.

Ok you can keep the articles - I’m working in the industry 6 days a week - I speak to them- nobody cares about what Trump said about Canada or France or whatever - when my show collapses because Trump scared  away tourists - I’ll be glad to say I was wrong - but until then - you can live in your bubble of conservatives, MAGA, liberals, progressives- when in the real world - most people do not care - unless there is an economic collapse - they will be here and seeing shows , the average person does not breathe WaPo articles , Fox News , NPR etc -  still waiting to meet a tourist who cares about Trump  lol - try meeting actual humans instead of soaking in doom and gloom media - again I work at. a tourist heavy show - 60% of the audience are foreign-  you don’t want to accept it, because some article from The Guardian or The Times told you it’s  doomsday- everyone is boycotting the dumb Orange man and the states , it’s not happening yet- would you be happier if it was ? You want us out of work to satisfy your political obsession ?

Hun, you can keep saying the same thing over and over but repetition does not make it true. NYC tourism from international locations is wayyyy down. I guess I do have to do your homework for you after all. It’s okay to be wrong. Just admit it (or don’t) and move on. The doubling down of inaccurate info is not helpful.

Ok so... yeah, you're talking to tourists who don't care about Trump or his policies... but the reason you're not talking to people who do care about Trump and the policies is because they are not there.

I've had a friend visit from out of town and they asked me if they thought they would have any "trouble" while they are here. If I just had this convo with someone, I guarantee a lot of people are having it as well.

The numbers are showing, this is a slower tourist season than in years past. But sure, ignore that because you talk to people who don't tell you that.

Again articles making predictions which are not panning out yet- panic media not seeped in reality - get back when you work 19 years solid in a Broadway house - you can cling to the articles - strange Broadway box office is actually up - so repeat after me - doomsday articles are not panning out - notice the key word in every article - predict- predict, do you understand? I predicted the Knicks would win the championship, please don’t come out me with “ predictions” my reading level is quite high - predictions vs reality - the predictions are not happening yet - I’ll let you know when everyone boycotts America over the dumb president - when the actual numbers are released we shall see if the predictions happened- where I work it’s robust business of foreign tourists

(Taste of) Honey -- You really don't understand how data and sampling works, do you?  You see the same small sliver of people every day -- and their opinions lead you to believe that the other 99.9% of the population agrees.  That's akin to you working in a tobacco shop and determining that everyone loves smoking!

Or like someone going on BWW and deciding that the other 99.9% of the population are all bitchy theatre queens!

this past weekend was the first rain-free weekend in 12 weeks. let's see what these grosses look like during July when there's only 30 Broadway shows running(at least until BOOP closes).

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. Maybe someone smarter than I can answer this because I’m not smart. What is the average recoupment timeline for a show nowadays?

With shows now capitalized at $20 million, how much longer can we expect it to be until a show recoups and becomes profitable?

I’ve been expecting The Outsiders to announce recoupment any day now but I seem to remember that & Juliet didn’t announce until around two months after the fact. I’m also curious about the possibility of shows such as Hell’s Kitchen and Gatsby.

I’m not as savvy on this and I wish we had easier access to this kind of information as someone who is fascinated by the changing economics of Broadway.

The New York Times recently reported that the only new musical that has recouped in the last three years is &Juliet.

Just in Time is expected to recoup by Labor Day according to Broadway Journal (if grosses hold). Outsiders may recoup soon.
