Someone educate me, and I am being 10000% serious. What is keeping Chicago open?

It continues to be profitable, and Barry Weissler is intent on running the show forever.

Two main factors: it's cheap to run, and nobody else wants that theatre because it's old and a very strange shape with little backstage room.

I agree with all that was said above plus they can still pop in the grosses with stunt casting (most recently Jinx Monsoon). It'll probably close when the Weisslers pass away.

Super impressed with JUST FOR US. A relatively unknown comedian and doing nearly 500k on 7 performances is really solid.

This is the least of the factors keeping Chicago running. As we've seen with the Cort and Lyceum and Studio 54 and other less-desireables, if there's a theatre available, a show will fill it. Plenty of plays and smaller musicals could make that house work with some creative scenic design.
(but yes, the Ambassador does need a reno. the bathrooms alone are a nightmare.)
How cheap IS Chicago to run in 2023 when they don't have a star name in? It's still a cast of 23 and a band of 14; that's not a small show. People tend to talk about it like it's DEAR EVAN HANSEN-sized.

It has iconic, timeless choreography, story, costuming, and score. I see it every time I'm in town. And yes, I absolutely hated it the first time I saw it because there were no set changes, etc.
CHICAGO attracts tourists mostly who have heard about the show and the movie for years and may be set on seeing it if it's their only time they'll be in NYC. It's also a cheap ticket and doesn't have to cost a family of four $500 to see.
Aside from being well known here in the US, it is a show that has world wide appeal and name recognition. Plus, the film "Chicago" helped the show reach many new fans. Throughout the "decades", numerous international productions have been mounted. "Chicago" WILL endure....even if the Weisslers are no longer in the picture. "It keeps on going...and going...and going."

Thank you to everyone who answered-I was truly curious! But it makes sense now.
HLL needs to pick up sales. Their weekly nut is rumored to be around $1 million. Might end up the biggest bust of the season.

So what will close first- Grey House or New York, New York?

Good Night Oscar holding steady with avg ticket of $134.42 is pretty impressive, twice as much as the Grey House average.

Grey House is only on sale through September 3rd and at this point I am just going to assume they are going to publicly confirm its a limited run and not extend past that date.
Overall, a pretty good week after the weird 4th of July impacts the last couple weeks.
Back to the Future is still looking good but not as insanely good as those first couple previews suggested.
A Beautiful Noise still has a surprisingly high average ticket price for its bad capacity and total gross.
I don't feel any better about chances for NYNY & OUAOMT despite slight growth for both. Here Lies Love looked a little better this week.
Good Night Oscar is doing extremely well for what it is.

$425,000 is quite a ways from "nearly 500K" but the results are still impressive.

I believe they have to state it’s a limited run when it was announced and not now. It’s an open run on sale through Sept 3rd. While I love love love Grey House but I believe this will be what happens though.

There is no rule stipulating when a show can and can't advertise as a limited run. Where on earth do people come up with this stuff?

I have noticed NY NY really stepping up their social media game in the past few weeks. Maybe they figured they didn't need it initially, saw Shucked's brilliant strategy and understand that they need to have a better presence. I hope it improves over the next few weeks but it may be too late?

That may very well be true -- doesn't make it a Rule.

by definition, doesn't every show (other than Chicago) become a limited run at some point?
