lmao not to pile on but I was losing my mind trying to think what ML stood for. Can we stick with MR? Not all of us can afford the brain cells to think so hard about every shows acronym haha

Glad it's not just me. :)

Well let's be fair it was one poster who kept using ML for some reason. MR definitely makes more sense.

Anyway, it does seem like Hadestown & Moulin Rouge were hit harder than most by the pandemic pause. They were big (& new) hits before the shutdown but hadn't really cemented themselves in the way other standbys have. I still think Moulin has a decent run left but I worry for Hadestown.

Sorry blonde moment! MR MR MR LOL

And I think Hadestown has had a great run. It's made back its money, has a healthy tour, will probably play internationally. By all accounts it did great for an unknown property.

Strange Loop numbers make me sad. I assumed TONY win would keep it alive for at least a year.

Has Chicago ever been in the 400,000 before?

Summer’s over, folks… the numbers for all shows are starting to dip, but we’ll be getting an influx of new productions in the weeks and months to come. I can’t say I wasn’t expecting this.

And about those Strange Loop figures… it makes me believe the Tonys have less and less of an impact on ticket buying every year. It’s almost as if those performances and the Best Musical prize rarely - if not never - matters in the long run (especially post-shutdown). Same goes for Hadestown and Moulin Rouge!.

Obviously post covid it's hard to say.

But I think for ASL, maybe the word-of-mouth isn't as good as, say, Hadestown? Like I don't see a lot of people posting about it where as Hadestown, I had friends outside of NYC who were talking about how amazing the album is, etc.

ASL has little word-of-mouth. The few people I know that have seen it either loved it or were mixed on it.  It also has little commercial appeal. Not sure the type of audience they're aiming towards, but I also haven't seen much advertising for it, too.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

A Strange Loop was always going to be a very tough sell on Broadway, with or without the Tonys. It’s just an extremely provocative show. Not to mention it only won two, unfortunately. I consider the fact that it won the Pulitzer, went to Broadway and won BEST MUSICAL a major accomplishment.

It also happens to be a masterpiece. Do not miss it. Such a shame about its numbers.

I feel like a couple more Tonys would've bolstered it for sure. I remember Gentleman's Guide being off the beaten commerical path, but it picked up 4 and had a decent run. However, ASL only netted 2 of 11, with more prizes going to COMPANY (deservedly so) and MJ (a surefire, tour-ready, commercial hit).

I'm really hating seeing the numbers fall and I know they are going to look worse during the Broadway week event when non-rush balcony seats are going to go as low as $25, which is UNHEARD of, especially for a Best Musical winner.

Unless they can stick Billy porter or another famous black artists as one of the thoughts, I don’t think it has much legs left. They should put every ounce of cash they have left in a pro shot or tour to get this to a wider audience, because I don’t think broadway is working for them. I can say the same for Hadestown, but we’ve yet to see whatlillias white will do for the box office. I hope it’s a net positive for them."

Doubt Porter has the push to significantly earn much to save a show.

I mean, he did swing back into KINKY BOOTS quite a few times and that bolstered some sales during some rocky patches. Granted, he was the star of that and here he's only a producer that would be relegated to an ensemble role (likely #2 or #4).

Yes, it has.  It has been in the $300s, not often clearly, but occasionally, I seem to recall in early December and January doldrums.  I assume they work under the assumption that losing weeks will be offset by profitable ones.

Big difference…when audiences finally went to see Guide, they discovered how much FUN it was.  The Tony’s made a big difference also because the number on TV was FUN.  Even with that, it was not a huge hit, although it seems to have been a hit with regional theatres, which I doubt will happen with ASL.

Looks like the "reports" of long, angry lines at the DEH box office when Gaten was out (for 3 shows) were, unsurprisingly, exaggerated.

I'm curious where this notion that Lillias is being brought in to revive Hadestown's fortunes has come from. People have been bringing up the fact that she won't move tickets since the beginning, but I'm not sure she's meant to? It's not like their previous Hermes was star casting either. It seems to me they've replaced one theatre legend with another and that's the end of it.

If they're looking to stunt cast, Eurydice and Orpheus are the clear place to do it. Their songs are extremely accommodating for a range of voices.

I know this sounds absurd, but give me Morgan Freeman as Hades.

Yes, precisely. I think the more apt analogy to ASL is  PASSION, a show that had similar mixed word of mouth.

Shawn Mendes would make a good Orpheus. I know he can still probably sell an arena, but he's not exactly the music "IT" boy anymore, so might be an interesting career move.

Shawn didn’t finish his multi-million dollar tour due to stress and anxiety. There’s no way he’s doing Broadway
