Just so y'all know, the rest of the world may have actually heard about Jeremy Piven. They've mentioned it on non-Broadway related programming, you know.
To most of America, this is what the skit said: "Look how silly and irrelevant Broadway is! No wonder they're going down the tubes!"
Yeah, I didn't get that from it at all, but I can't really speak for "most of America."

Ahh! Thanks for the youtube link, EponineAmneris! The NBC video is one of those lame ones where you can only watch from the US.

aaahh.. NPH was my very first Mark ever... i saw him do the role in La Jolla when it premiered here on the west coast.. oh the memories... i loved his Mark...
This thread is absolutely breathtaking. Judging from some of the posts, a good number of you come across like the Star Trek convention nerds from the SNL with William Shatner, picking apart minutia and missing the overall experience.
I would give some of you the same advice that Shatner gave the Trekkies, get out of your parents' basements. Pronto. This was a sketch in which Tommy Tune's penis was compared to Michael Jordan's by Neil Patrick Harris as Mark from the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, RENT. And some of you are busy pointing out that while YOU are insider enough to get a Jeremy Piven reference, "most of America" is not. Others of you are lamenting the use of recognizable musical icons past and present while others lament that some running shows were not included. Seriously?
Leave the basements, breathe the air of the real world in which people can find an overall experience funny and entertaining without having to get every single reference. I once brought two relatives who had never seen a Broadway show in their lives to see Forbidden Broadway. They laughed their asses off. I guess some of you might think they had to be stupid since they didn't "know" what they were laughing at.
Namo - you have a problem with people who enjoyed something? We are posting about something, that you, obviously, found unappealing, so why bother to read it?
As far as that comment about Trekkies? I have never been to a convention, but enjoyed the first series as I guess my name can attest to and I happen to have pointed ears. What does that make me, some sort of basement dweller?
Lynnedear, you have misread my thread. I have a problem with people who are picking the sketch apart for not being too insider, while pointing out that parts were so insider "America" wouldn't get them.
It was a terrific sketch and watching a bunch of metaphorical Broadway basement dwellers bitch about what was "right" and what was "wrong" with it is very illuminating.
Now reread my post and see if your comprehension clears up and check dictionary.com for "metaphorical," you should find it enlightening.
Though they didn't only use shows that are still running, I think it's fine, as long it allows SNL to continue to do Broadway. If it gets too obscure, the sketches won't make the final cut.
"Rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."
-Neil Patrick Harris
Name, darling, I am quite aware of what "metaphorical" means, but so kind of you to suggest the use of a dictionary. May I suggest that it is not my comprehension that is at fault, perhaps it's your writing that is at issue. Possibly, it is not as enlightening as you intended.
Saw the sketch on the NBC website and loved it! Of course, I love me some NPH (I own all of the seasons of Doogie Howser on DVD - yes I am a dork) and was so happy they had him play Mark. Wish I could have seen his Mark live.
I was kinda surprised they didn't have a Disney show represented since they had Wicked there, though.
I thougjht the entire show was good. The Brodway skit was hilarious. I didn't catch everything because there was some conversation where I was when it started. But knowing I would not be home to see SNL, I taped it.
Did I just see Jeremy Piven on the red carpet at the Golden Globes? I guess the mercury poisoning is in remission...
Now they're interviewing him... and he's making it seem like he was in critical conditions. The doctors forced him to quit! Yet now he looks fit as a fiddle. Things that make you go Hmmmmmm....
