Well, uh, I doubt the possibility of all three of them winning. Just a little. :)
And I'll be happy with either JLY winning or Michael. If Michael wins, though, I'll probably dance around the room or something. And it isn't at all unfair to give the award to him just because it isn't new material--part of the brilliance in Michael's performance lies in his fresh, new take on the character of Sweeney.

So no actor who plays Hamlet or Lady Macbeth or Rose in GYPSY or Don Quixote or Medea or Blanche Dubois or Henry Higgins or Evita or the Emcee should ever be eligible for an award, even if their performance is completely unlike previous interpretations of the role?
so yer leaning toward Michael C. Margo?

I'm staying out of the prediction business, at least for now. Maybe I'll have an opinion in May once we've seen all the nominees.

I agree with Margo. I mean, that's what revivals should be for, to let actors reveal new things from the material that previous actors didn't bring the first time around. The one reason I loved Bernadette Peters in Gypsy so much it's because she defied the image I had of Mamma Rose, I think she "de-Mermanized" it, and she helped me understand the character a little better. More recently, Patti LuPone "de-Lansburized" the character of Mrs.Lovett. So, not to get on your case RentBoy but speaking from personal experience (I'm an actor/director) and from what I've seen on Broadway, it is a lot more challenging for an actor working with already-tried material because on top of everything, he/she has to deal with comparisons and not falling in the trap of playing the role like the previous actors.

I wasn't blown away by Cerveris the way I was by LuPone, but for cripe's sake he has a much tougher job than Connick.

dispite how any other shows do, like "Tarzan" I believe that the Tony should go to Cerveris, he is a Broadway actor loved by many and has a good reputation for Broadway. And his performance is much more demanding and deep.
I've seen Cerveris, Connick, and JLY... The TONY belongs to Mr. Cerveris!

And isn't there a lead guy in Drowsy Chaperone who doesn't sing or dance, but is apparently wonderful? Several people over at ATC were touting him as deserving the Best Actor Tony, despite having no musical numbers (it's happened once or twice before).
I wouldn't write off Tarzan yet
You've got to be kidding.
For the love of all that is good in the world, can the genius who started this thread please correct the spelling of Connick's name?
I'm not making a prediction because I feel it is still too early, but I'd be a very happy man if Cerveris won. I still haven't seen Jersey Boys (I've been putting it off for a while, but I'll get there soon), so I cannot comment on John Lloyd Young's performance. And I found Connick to be charming but dull.
I think Alan Cumming is going to blow everyone away as MacHeath.
Cervaris should win, his role is so much harder, he is actually playing a character. Connick is just playing Connick. Kinda like Friends, at the begining the actors were actully acting, but by the last 5 seasons, they were just being themselves.
I think Connick is fantastic in PJ Game. I thoroughly enjoyed Cerveris in Todd and JLY has clearly made a splash of a debut.
There's a lot you could say about how voters have swung in the past, but as we all recall, there have been pretty huge upsets in the past, so there really is no predicting.
You could say they're going to give it to the newcomer (JLY) because they can make a star out of him a la Sutton Foster in Millie.
You could say they're going to give it to Cerveris for recreating a classic role for the stage a la Stokes Mitchell in Kate.
Or you could say Connick will win based on the fact that he's a commercial star and could bring interest to Broadway from an audience that loves him a la Martin Short in Little Me.
As for other possible nominees...there's no telling until the other shows are at least in previews...
It could be none of them, for example Hunter Foster was nominated two years ago, and although he was good, he just wanst that good for the Tony
Hunter's nomination for Little Shop was an apology nomination for not having been nominated for his real star-turn: Urinetown, for which he should have won.
I agree, he was jaw dropping in Urinetown
I don't think it was an apology, there wasn't anyone else that year.
I'm fully behind Michael. He's got quite a resume, and more than proved himself worthy, I think. I hope that accounts for something. JLY has his singing in a falsetto on his side, but I'm not sure the acting in that show merits an award. Connick may be good but I don't think he's in the same league quite yet with Cerveris.
