I was going to refrain from sharing my opinion (especially because it’s apparently going to be an unpopular one on this thread), but apparently I’m not able to do so.
First of all, in full disclosure, I’m a fan of Hamilton. I also recognize not every one is and even if you are, you might feel this award is unwarranted. I get that. Personally, if they were receiving a lifetime award, I’d agree it is premature. But they’re not. That also means they’re not stealing a spot from Carol, Doris, Bette, or Liza, all of whom for all we know may have been offered the honor before and declined it. (I’d add Jane Fonda into the mix). In fact, Wikipedia says this: “Doris Day repeatedly turned down the honors because her fear of flying prevented her from attending the ceremony.”
But they have given out special awards before, correct? Such as The Mark Twain Award for Humor, which was added in the last 20 years.. I also think as these honors have a governmental/political aspect to them and Hamilton is a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon that brings our political past and present to the masses in a way none of us could have ever imagined that this award makes sense. I recognize many won’t agree. That’s okay. I remember people being upset last year that LL Cool J, Gloria Estefan and Lionel Richie were being honored. Some valid points were made. The honors were still handed out. We all survived. We will again.
Personally, I don’t care for Reba (even before being reminded of her unkind comments about the Dixie Chicks), but I can acknowledge that her talent has helped her survive in an industry that is not kind to the non-young. I may not like her, but she still is deserving. In fact, when I read her name, I thought “Well, that makes sense.”
