The theater’s landlord, the archdiocese of NY, in recent weeks has begun heavily scrutinizing scripts of potential renters of the theater, leading to several productions having to relocate and the theater’s current GM and director to resign. The Connelly as a result has ceased operations.

I'm surprised this hasn't happened earlier. Landlords 100% have the right to dictate what happens in the buildings they own and ensure it reflects their values.

They do?

The school is (partly) funded by the theater. Who wants to contribute to the dangerous and misogynistic inculcation of impressionable young minds? Not me.

One of the problems with the normalisation of so called 'cancel culture' is that you can't always pick and choose what is cancelled vs not.....
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Feel bad for the staff, particularly the GM who stepped away, that got held up in the crossfire. What an embarrassment of a decision on the Church’s part. Reckless.
I fully agree with those who say it's the church's right to make this decision, and with those who recognize how ridiculous and irrelevant a church would have to be to make this decision. (As someone who survived two decades of Catholic education, I'm in an unassailable position to judge how stupid all of it is.)
