DIRTY DANCING: THE MUSICAL

STRICTLY LIMITED ENGAGEMENT

Frances 'Baby' Houseman, a sweet daddy's girl, goes to a very respectable summer camp in the Catskills only to unexpectedly fall for rough, tough dance instructor Johnny Castle -- who takes her on as his dance partner. Adapted by the writer/creator of the 1987 film, with new scenes and dance sequences.

Set during an unforgettable summer in the Catskills in 1963, DIRTY DANCING: THE MUSICAL follows Frances "Baby" Houseman, whose undeniable connection with charismatic dance instructor Johnny Castle leads to an unexpected discovery of love, passion, and independence. Pulsing with the iconic music from the original film, including such hits as "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," "Hungry Eyes," "Do You Love Me?" and "She's Like the Wind," the musical captures the exhilaration of forbidden romance and the courage it takes to stand by one's convictions, all told through electrifying dance and a finale that will lift you out of your seat. Adapted by the writer/creator of the 1987 film, with new scenes and dance sequences.

Re: DIRTY DANCING: THE MUSICAL (Lena Horne) - 40th Anniversary tour on Broadway

Stopping on Broadway with the hopes of a few Tony nominations. It'll be gone by July.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

What the hell. Sure 🤷‍♂️

I know this has been around the block quite a few times on tour. Is there an original score, or just songs from the movie, or both?

Was going to ask this as well. Which version (as there have been many) of the show is this?

That is correct. I saw this a few weeks ago. It was the worst national tour I have ever seen. The music is not connected to the plot at all. The characters don’t sing, and the book is awful. Zero chance this gets any Tony nominations.

Would honestly rather see shows like Prada, Griswold’s Broadway Vacation, etc, because at least those have original scores, and are actually musical. Dirty Dancing felt like a play with music in the background.

Do we think this invokes the classics rule? Which would technically make it a revival at the Tonys?

Maybe it's BEACHES all over again ...

... this might sell better over a spring / summer run?
