The line between hero and villain is a headline.
Attica! Attica! The stage adaptation of Dog Day Afternoon premieres on Broadway tomorrow night (March 10), marking the Main Stem debuts of “The Bear” costars Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Written by Stephen Adly Guirgis and directed by Rupert Goold, the play — based on the 1975 Al Pacino crime film of the same name — also features Elizabeth Canavan, Esteban Andres Cruz, Spencer Garrett, Jessica Hecht, Danny Johnson, Michael Kostroff, Paola Lázaro, Wilemina Olivia-Garcia, John Ortiz, Christopher Sears, Michael Shayan, Jeff Still, and Andrea Syglowski. Dog Day Afternoon opens on March 30 for a limited run through July 12 at the August Wilson Theatre.
“Step back into the sweltering summer of 1972, New York City — a time when the Vietnam War looms large, Watergate headlines flood the news, and one man’s desperate act captivates the nation. Emmy Award winner Jon Bernthal and two-time Emmy Award winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach ignite the stage with grit, heart, and humor. Witness the gut-wrenching twist as it unfolds, immersing you in the unfiltered chaos of a man — and a city — on the edge.”

I saw the final dress tonight and out of respect I’ll keep this brief as I think some fine tuning and tightening up will take place over the next few weeks. I predict this wins the Tony for best set and best featured actress for (the overdue) Jessica Hecht. They spared no expense on the physical production. Also, for those on the fence about where to sit, there’s some fun surprises up in the mezz.
Excited to hear what people think of this one in the coming weeks.

Thank God Broadway is getting actual sets again. That makes me even more excited for this.

With all the names attached to this show this post complimenting the set is not a good sign.

Thanks. Seeing this in April.
One question: How far does it stray from the movie?

It is definitely not a carbon copy of the film but the basic story and plot remains the same. But the script is definitely different than the screenplay. I did enjoy it but I’m holding back going into too much detail as it was a dress rehearsal and the director let us know that rewrites are still happening.
The show got a lot of laughs.

Any idea what the approximate run time is right now? I couldn’t find anything listed.

I did. The first few people there (first arrived at 5:30) got front row center orchestra. I was about 16th in line and got partial view house left.

A Wilson rep reported a 2:30 runtime with an intermission to me earlier today, but as per usual with these early previews, expect it to go a bit overtime.
Alex J. Gould and Christopher Sears are listed as the understudies for Moss-Bachrach. Gould also covers for Bernthal.
