Feels like a stunt since the videos are to be public uploaded to social media.
They could do far worse than the likes of Carrie St. Louis, Kerry Butler, and (allegedly, please tell me I'm wrong) Kelli O'Hara in workshops.
Awww, how sweet. Reminds me of ON YOUR FEET! doing the same thing all the while Ana Villafañe was already cast as Gloria and the film biopic SELENA doing that nationwide search in several cities while Jennifer Lopez was already cast.
An email arrived yesterday that states: This Tuesday, 1/28 at 10am CT, we've got a huge announcement to make: Dolly - An Original Musical directed by Bartlett Sher is coming. Perhaps Studio 54?

Studio 54? Not a chance. If ANY show belongs in the Palace, it's this one.

Kelli O’Hara as Dolly is such a bewildering choice.
Unfortunate they can’t wait for Chenoweth.
If anything, both the Nederlander and Broadhurst will be available in a few weeks.
Their website says coming to Broadway in 2026.
Is it doing an out of town, or cold open on bway?
O’Hara is a bewildering choice but so is Bart Sher.
Kerry seems all wrong for this

Well today's announcement says it's coming in 2026 -- so it isn't really relevant what's available now, is it?
FWIW, they have secured their theatre.
This is an ATG production… Hudson after WAITING FOR GODOT?

For clarity, how do we know that Kelli will be playing Dolly? I get the Bart Sher connection but is starlightlocamotion confirming that Kelli will be announced as Dolly tomorrow.
The show will have an out of town tryout in Nashville from July 18-August 17.

I can't imagine Kelli would do this, but Sher's attachment. Perhaps she will be a revelation.
Has Nashville ever been the host to a tryout before?

Nashville has hosted workshops or pre-broadway runs of The Prom, Waitress, Come from Away and Color Purple among others.

It's going to be at Belmont's Fisher center which isn't where tours go in Nashville so that will be interesting.
Very interesting. I wonder if it’s equipped to handle a Broadway size show.

I wish Chenoweth was doing this show instead of Queen of Versailles. She'd make a great Dolly, and they're also friends irl.

None of those musicals had a pre-Broadway tryout run in Nashville. The Prom and Color Purple both premiered at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Waitress at ART, and Come From Away did a series of pre-Broadway runs at La Jolla, Ford's Theatre in DC, Seattle Rep, and Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto.
Not sure how I feel about the “3 Dollys” gimmick. Dolly is timeless and so should the character.

Is Dolly Parton an iconic figure of American pop culture? Yes.
Is Dolly Parton one of the greatest living songwriters? Hell yes.
Is Dolly Parton's life story interesting enough to carry the weight of a Broadway musical? I go between "don't know" and "don't think so".
Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I'm not sold.

Sounds like as much as anything else it's a way to show respect to Dolly the artist, like how Purple Rain is premiering in Minneapolis this fall.
Has the 3 lead bio musical structure been used successfully in a hit musical yet? Seems like the ones that turned a profit don't make use of that device.

Not that I can remember.
The problem is most of them do old, middle, young for the three, which is awfully boring.
It could be interesting to do something along the lines of Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan movie I’M NOT THERE where different actors play different facets of that person’s life.

Not quite a bio musical in the same sense, but Fun Home used it fairly effectively
