They've become meaningless. The only arguably "legitimate" name on that list is David Mamet who, despite his recent descent into political madness -- does have a truly outstanding body of work.

I could see this end up like Trump’s 250th concert and people end up pulling out. Barbara Mandrell has a pretty loyal LGTB fan base and I’m somewhat surprised she agreed.

I mean...David Foster's resume is nothing to shake a stick at.

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

Re: Donald Trump Takes Over the Kennedy Center

I think they are all reasonable, deserving nominees. But clearly there is also a Trump/republican friendly requirement for induction now. Anka is apolitical but is a longtime friend of Trump, Andy Garcia is longtime conservative repub, Mamet very publicly changed from liberal dem to conservative repub and has been a big trump supporter. No clue about Mandrell and Foster. I note that under Trump there are no ballet dancers or classical musicians anymore. It is really disgusting how Trump has politicized the Kennedy Center

Actor Andy Garcia was born in Havana, Cuba, and arrived in the United States at the age of five as a political refugee.

Foster and his granddaughter (I mean wife) Katherine McPhee are big MAGA repug donors.

Gloria Gaynor had no problem accepting last year.

Re: Donald Trump Takes Over the Kennedy Center

Bottom line: Mamet has been an outstanding playwright for over 50 years, has written several notable books and essays about the theatre, has directed several distinguished films (for which he also wrote the screenplay) and had a four season series on television "The Unit." He is truly deserving of this honor (and I don't necessarily agree with his politics!!)....

Re: Donald Trump Takes Over the Kennedy Center

Well... he's been writing for that long; he stopped being "outstanding" 30 years ago or so.

Writes itself??? I was born in Havana, Cuba, and arrived in the United States as a kid as a political refugee. That's also true of my large extended family. Not one of us have EVER voted Republican. And that goes for the first generation that was born here as well as the second.
