All this press …that audience is quiet

Agree the audience was quite, but in a way it’s more respectful than the screaming super fans who make it all about them and not the performance.

I think it’s totally possible most of the audience had no idea the show was shut down at all. This is a tourist show at this point and the people seeing the show aren’t going to be up on theater news. A show shutting down for three weeks means nothing to them—if they even heard the news.

The Eugene O’Neill Theatre fire was primarily covered in the NY tri-state area so the mainstream national and global population had no idea or paid any attention to it if it even was mentioned in the news. I have friends out here on the west coast who follow Broadway and had zero idea about the fire. As mentioned above, at this point, THE BOOK OF MORMON is a tourist show so those who attended the return performance never had their tickets canceled so I’m sure 99% were oblivious to the fact that what they were attending was the show’s first performance after a 3 week shutdown due to a fire at the theatre. Had this been a fairly new show, the fan girl screaming would have set off the smoke alarms.

If the audience didn't know coming in, they did right before the show started. Matt Stone came out and gave a speech explaining that the show was reopening after a fire. He mentioned some of the firefighters and first responders who were in attendance last night. He then brought out Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, who presented a proclamation, recognizing the FDNY's heroic efforts to save the theatre, which was given to the FDNY's Chief of Department John Esposito. The news crews covered that and were invited to stay to shoot "Hello." The audience last night might have been a little quiet at the beginning, but picked right up with "Two by Two" and onward. It was a great night for Mormon.

They wouldn't have done it without the permission of the production, which clearly would want the press.

3 Weeks After Fire, ‘The Book of Mormon’ Reopens on Broadway
The production and the theater owner declined to say whether workers had been paid during the three-week shutdown. Local 802, a union representing musicians, said the “Mormon” musicians had received their base salary while the theater was closed; Actors’ Equity did not respond to inquiries about pay.

In case anyone else is curious… here is what the spotlight booth currently looks like. Looks like they just did patchwork and any further fixes would come at a later date whenever the theatre becomes available for a comprehensive renovation.
Curious where the spotlight operators are working from.

Um… is all of that black in the center section the smoke damage? Maybe it came down to closing the show or keeping it open, but I’m surprised they re-opened the theatre still looking so visibly damaged.

I’m assuming they got paid. If they didn’t, surely someone would have blown the lid. They were probably thrilled to have three weeks paid time off.

"Shocked that they were able to reopen so quickly"
Me too, ACL2006. It's because they cut corners. The spotlight booth was completely destroyed. Rebuilding will take a great deal of time. So they opted to take a shortcut using an inferior method of lighting the performers.
The operators will probably be in a separate room, watching the actors on a screen, directing a robo light through a joystick, like a video game. I'm sure that many would consider this a good trade-off, but this is a terrible precedent.
It won't be the same experience, but this is a trend that producers have been aiming for for at least a decade. Many people eill never know what they missed. This is a dumbing down of lighting design
