The Book of Mormon was one of a handful of shows to send out more than one national touring company. I believe the 1st NTs set is being used in Australia and the 2nd NT set was mostly reconfigured for the non-equity tour. I’m unsure what the status of the UK/European tour set is, but I imagine complications like overseas transportation and potential tariffs may not make it worth bringing it over.

Now seems like a good time to offer a bit of advice to everyone. Whenever you get settled into a public place, it is important to take a moment and make a mental note of where the nearest emergency exits are. Especially in a crowded theatre or nightclub. In a stressful evacuation situation, our brains tend to make us want to exit the same way we came in which is usually not the quickest way to exit if there is an emergency.

That'll take awhile to repair. So now we have to ask, do they attempt to reopen in a few months? Or is the show done? Or do they hope another theater becomes available and they can relocate?"
chill out
its way too early for these types of decisions to be made
but u can rest assured they are starting to considerall of these options already
just moving to another theatre is not as simple as you seem to believe
the set was not built for portability and depends on modifications made specifically for the oneill
it is very expensive for a broadway show to move
which is why it is so rare
recently they havenot been making the grosses necessary to justify such an expense
my guess is they will max out their insurance policy and attempt to make a comeback at the oneill
using the fire as a publicity stunt to goose grosses
maybe they will evenadd a joke about this inthe script
until then
relax

Really, really good reminder for folks - and keep in mind, in any space with food service, the kitchen is likely an option. Never too many reminders now.

It's not opening up next week. Not at all. Sorry, but you should try to get a refund and plan to see something else.

Anyone else remember when the Late Night guys continued to pay their show staffs during the writers strike? It would be nice to see Matt and Trey follow their lead here.

"On the morning of Monday, May 4, a fire was reported at our Broadway home, the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. FDNY was immediately contacted, were on site within minutes, and quickly extinguished the fire.
ATG Entertainment and The Book of Mormon extend their deepest thanks to the firefighters and emergency responders for their bravery and speedy response.
The fire was limited to the follow spot booth of the O’Neill. At this time, the exact cause of the fire is unknown.
ATG Entertainment and The Book of Mormon are currently working with a team of industry professionals to begin repairs needed to the building.
Performances of The Book of Mormon are canceled through Sunday, May 17. Ticket holders for impacted performances will be notified via their point of purchase to receive refunds or reschedule.
Next week, ATG Entertainment & The Book of Mormon will provide an update regarding performances, which are anticipated to resume at the Eugene O’Neill in the coming weeks.
We can’t wait to be back in our favorite place, doing something incredible - see you soon!"

Wigs and costuming will need to be redone, possibly, but what else prevents an established show like this from getting back on its feet within a few months? Kinda seems like if there’s a will, there will be a way."
truly amazing how ppl dont understand
its not as simple as u all are making it out to be
but i shall start with the first obstacle
book of mormon is an ATG show
the majestic is owned by the Shubert Organization
while not unheard of
cross pollination is rare
also storing sets is costly
due to something called rent
and if a show has produced multiple sets
chances are they are being used for satellite productions worldwide
trust someone who knows
book of mormon isnt going anywhere
in a few weeks repairs will have been made
and all of the hand wringing on here will cease
until they cast andrew barth feldman as Nabulungi

Sharing the exact wording from the vacate order on DOB BIS, not to argue one way or another, just to share what the City has stated:
- Y1-FULL VACATE BUILDING SUSTAINED HEAVY FIRE, WATER AND SMOKE DAMAGE DUE TO FIRE IN SPOTLIGHT ROOM AT ABOVE 3 FLOOR SECTION. ALL ROOF HATCHES HAVE BEEN REMOVED AND SMALL SECTIONS OF ROOF MATERIAL HAVE BEEN REMOVED AS WELL.

All things considered, and barring any other developments, this seems like something that can be repaired in a relatively short amount of time- a month or two, I would guess.

I'll guess and say they still have some kind of 15th anniversary concert somewhere and that'll officially close the show. A full vacate likely means the theater has significant damage."
Why? They already celebrated their 15th Anniversary performance.

I passed by the theater this evening, there’s a truck in front of the theater with tubes attached to the upper part of the theater with a noise, possibly ventilation?

There should be information in their contract re: cancelled performances. If they have specific questions re: how/whether or not the info in their contract applies to this circumstance, they should be able to contact their Equity rep for clarification.
I imagine that staff will be appropriately notified as info becomes available, and there are unemployment benefits available if the applicant qualifies.
PS: Who, specifically, are these "many people" you mention? If they're like you, and not directly effected, they should keep their noses where they belong, and allow the process to proceed w/o distraction.

A friend in the show was informed this morning that they hope to be back by the first week in June. The entire ground level is intact as are the floors associated with the physical aspects of the show (no water damage, etc). While the top floors affected are being worked on their main focus is getting everything needed to get the show back up and running. This is why they’re canceling performances a week at a time in the event they’re ready to resume at a moment’s notice. Repairs will be ongoing, obviously, but won’t be affecting performances.

I’m not sure about the contracts with IATSE, AFM, and other theatre workers. Here’s the section regarding cancelled performances in the Actors Equity contract:
51. PERFORMANCES LOST
(A) If the company cannot perform because of fire, accident, strike, riot, Act of God, or the public enemy, which could not be reasonably anticipated or prevented, then the Actor shall not be entitled to any salary for the time during which Actor's services shall not for such reason or reasons be rendered, except:
(1) If the company is away from the Point of Organization, the Actor shall receive one-eighth of minimum salary plus one-seventh of minimum out-of-town expenses for the first day lost and one-seventh of minimum out-of-town expenses for each day on which performances are not given thereafter.
- (a) The company may add a replacement performance in the same week as the canceled performance without any additional compensation provided the Actors receive no less than 24 hours' notice. If a performance is so scheduled, the Actors' salary and Per Diem will not be reduced for the canceled performance;
- (b) The company may add a replacement performance in a subsequent week of the same engagement with no less than 72 hours' notice. If a performance is so scheduled, each Actor will be due an additional one-eighth of Actor's contractual salary for that replacement performance and Actor's salary and Per Diem may be reduced for the canceled performance.
- (c) If a replacement performance is scheduled after the scheduled final performance of the tour, the Producer will reimburse the Actor for any additional travel expenses caused by such scheduling.
(B) Should any of the foregoing conditions continue for a period of 10 days or more, either party may terminate the contract (except on a Term Contract, only the Actor may terminate) and the Producer will pay for all services to date and transportation back to the Point of Organization or the Place of Engagement. (See Rule 72 TRANSPORTATION AND BAGGAGE)

I suspect everybody will still be compensated, at least for a while, but yeah, I find it odd that people would assume that paychecks are contractually mandated in a situation like this. If employer negligence was found to be the cause of the fire, then maybe an argument could be made, but generally union contracts protect members from employer exploitation and mistreatment. A fire causing the venue to be shut down isn't that.
