That's absoluetly ridiculous(refund line). I honestly don't get all the hype of Fantasia, her voice I mean, I can't speak for her acting. The fact of the matter is that she doesn't have proper technique and it effects her voice to the point where she can't preform. She should not be in a job where she cannot do what she is supposed to. It obviously hurts the tour, which might not have even sold if Fantasia wasn't attached, who knows.
Oh, and I had no idea that The Color Purple, set in the 1930's, was about her, who was born in 1984! Crazy stuff...

What does that even mean? People can only play characters of their same era now?
Like it or not, people are not going to see The Color Purple. They're going to see Fantasia in The Color Purple. Why wouldn't they want a refund if the performance they wanted to see isn't happening? It's probably not the choice I or other musical fans would make, but I mean... get over yourself. Not everyone goes to the theatre for the same reason as you. That's one of the many reasons Fantasia is so great (when she's in); she brings a new kind of audience to the theatre, many for the first time.
I find those people wanting refunds no more ridiculous than if the rest of The Color Purple cast was out and a Fantasia solo concert was on in its place and all the musical fans wanting to see "The Color Purple" wanted refunds.

Exactly, why are those people in line ridiculous for wanting what they have been directly marketed to want?
THEY WANT TASIA because she is all over every piece of advertising and the three people who saw her in the show said it was like the SECOND COMING OF CHRIST! I'd be in that line too.
Hell, I still want to see Tasia after 4 attempts.

Posted: 2/15/10 at 10:07amI saw Fantasia's performance as Celie on Broadway and it was one of the single greatest performances I have seen in my life. Not sure she would have the same impact in any other role, but as Celie she was magnificent.

I'll always echo those sentiments. The woman has a pretty shameful work ethic but, her performance as Celie was a revelation. I am lucky to have seen her three times in the role. And to echo adamgreer, as well, seeing the role with a standby/understudy (in my case, Montego Glover on two occasions) was no where near as effective of an experience.

Posted: 2/15/10 at 3:26pmI happened to be one of the lucky ones to see Fantasia at the Pantages and she was absolutely spectacular! If you're so worried about getting understudies just go on either the first preview opening night or closing night! I went on the first preview because I new there would be no understudies and I was right!

Posted: 2/16/10 at 1:31amThere was an episode of Chelsea Lately where they talked about her (I think it was when her reality show was first announced) and they said something like she missed a total of like 95 performances in her broadway run. They may have been exaggerating or my memory is fuzzy.

I personally Think they should bring Jeannette Bayardelle back and have her close out the tour. She was awesome in the tour the last time it played La And she won an NAACP award for her portrayal of Celie.
In Regards to Brandi Chavonne Massey. I have seen this actress perform on numerous occasions on both the broadway and regional theater stage. Now I doubt she is as Bad as you are making her out to be in the role. Remember folks acting is about choice because she doesn't make the choices you expect her to make based on past artist doesn't make her a Bad Performer. I am sure she is killing the hell out of the role. I saw her as Lucy on Broadway with David Hasselhoff and she was Amazing. I saw her in Hair at City Center she was Amazing. She works because she is Fierce for those who wonder why she gets hired. She trains and works.. Everyone has bad days and for those that are passing judgement. How about we support our Broadway actors instead of tearing them down. Then we wonder why the hire stars. Brandi Chavonne Massey is doing her thing it may not be your cup of tea but don't bash the woman and her talent.
I hope Fantasia gets better soon and can resume her performances.. and for those freaking out about her being out. YOU WENT TO SEE THE COLOR PURPLE THE MUSICAL NOT FANTASIA IN CONCERT!!! I love Fantasia and nothing against her. You are there to see Celie's journey over hardships and leave the theater a little bit different than the way you came in

Then let those particular posters have their opinions; they didn't like Ms. Massey as Celie, plain and simple. No one needs a soapbox defense of her work ethic and training simply because they weren't impressed with her performance in the role.

Posted: 2/17/10 at 3:51pmI saw Phyre Hawkins go on as Celie before Fantasia came back (Kenita Miller was the principal) and although I will admit it was my first time seeing the show, I thought she was really good...is she no longer an understudy?
#72Fantasia in the Color Purple
Posted: 2/17/10 at 4:04pm^^She is but there are two understudies for the part.

...the actress has added appearances to her run in order to make up for her missed performances over the weekend. Fantasia will now perform during the Sunday matinee shows on Feb. 21 and 28, which had originally been her time off.
Fantasia adds performances to 'Color Purple' run at Pantages
#74Fantasia in the Color Purple
Posted: 2/17/10 at 4:18pmShe'll miss more performances so her doing the 2 extra performances will probably be null & void.
