This has been announced for the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. What do you think of the casting? Can you see Calista Flockhart as Martha and Zachary Quinto as George? (I think they are more suitable as Nick and Honey.)

I'm not familiar with Flockhart. While Quinto is technically close to the age of George, i just don't see it. I think it's absolutely absurd.

You ARE aware Flockhart is a 57 year old woman today. She’s not Ally McBeal anymore, which ended about 20 years ago. Quinto is more questionable at age 44 and can still be believable as Nick. They will definitely be aging him to balance with Flockhart.

Quinto would make a fantastic George. Flockhart, on the other hand, is wild casting. I can't imagine her as Martha for even a second. I don't know that she can be, for lack of a better word, intimidating.

Quinto and Flockhart are each only two and five years younger than their characters, so I don’t see age being an issue. Quinto has played characters similar to George, and he seems like an ideal choice. I’m concerned about Flockhart, only because I’ve never seen her play anything close to Martha. It will be exciting to see if she has a non traditional take on the role.

I live in LA and had tickets to see Laura Linney and Rupert Everett in "Virginia Woolf" during an aborted NY trip in late March 2020. So now I guess I'll settle for Quinto and Flockhart. Very excited about the former, and trying to reserve judgment about the latter (though I have some serious doubts).

This is some really bizarre casting.

Calista Flockart is a brilliant actress. I have no doubt she'll be amazing as Martha. If you haven't seen it, check her out in Neil LaBute's "Medea Redux" at about the 33 min mark.

Based on his recent performances, I hope Quinto can find a less affected way of acting. To me, he's the odd casting choice.

Linney & Everett far more compelling than the casting of Flockhart & Quinto but it's only at the Geffen. Flockahart is far from being a brilliant actress and as Martha just don't see it at all!?

It's great to see Calista back to acting again, aside from that year on Supergirl, she's really been low-profile.

Still greatly disappointed about the Metcalf/Everett revival not receiving a proper run. They were absolutely sensational. But this? I can get behind this.

Sigh. Denver Center has a Virginia Woolf production January 7 to March 6, but it's directed by Rose Riordan - no cast announced. but, the Geffen is directed by Gordon Greenwood, so no Flockhart/Quinto for us.

Y’all…it was Laurie Metcalf. NOT Laura Linney

I’m in the camp of wild for seeing what Flockhart will do and meh about Quinto. To me he plays everything the same. There’s nothing dynamic about him. He seems oddly reserved in his acting choices like he’s afraid to break a sweat.
I think Flockhart will wow people.

There really needs to be a yearly revival of VIRGINIA WOOLF... or maybe multiple yearly revivals playing at the same time in the same places.

Ugh, of course you’re right…two of my favorite actresses. Blame my addled theater-deprived brain for the mixup. I had also hoped to see Linney in My Name is Lucy Barton on the same trip, but I recall that closed before I could get there.

Martha is usually played by a curvy woman with a "sexy mama" kind of vibe (she refers to herself as "the earth mother" at least once in the play, and has to believably be able to seduce Nick, who can probably have any girl he wants), and when Amy Morton was announced for the Broadway revival of several years ago, I thought she would be completely miscast. However, Morton was great, and seeing her, Kathleen Turner, and Elizabeth Taylor all play the role has shown me that it doesn't really matter what Martha looks like.
Bill Irwin and Tracy Letts gave completely different interpretations of George and both won Tonys for it, so there is definitely room for invention with that role as well. Zachary Quinto will be fine I'm sure, but he is definitely too young for the part, especially opposite a Martha who is over a decade older than he is.

$10 bucks, before this goes up, the cast changes, someone drops out or the show get's cancelled/postponed all together.

George is supposed to be 46. Quinto is 44. Martha is supposed to be 52. Flockhart is 57.
