For me, best theater news of the day.

I’d be surprised if it just stays where it was. The cost of moving a whole show probably out weighs justifying the move to a new theater. And Mockingbird is a large show.

The Broadhurst is the only appropriate Shubert house available (and even that is a little too big). If they're indeed reopening within the next 6 weeks, my guess is that they will be returning to the Belasco. But hopefully we'll get news soon.

I'm really getting worried that this won't happen, I've been waiting to hear so I can book tix to see it next month when I'm in to see Funny Girl.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

Oof

I know we're all on the same page here, but of course it has to be said: by announcing it as a limited engagement, they've effectively just announced their permanent closing, since it had previously been an open run. A shame, but understandable of course.

This show really got a bad shake of it. I'm surprised the Bob Dylan name didn't do more for ticket sales.

Like many shows they were screwed over by the pandemic - they intended to open in Spring of 2020, probably because they knew they needed Tony buzz to sell tickets - but by JUST missing the Tony eligibility due to a technicality, they were forced to re-open in the fall without the Tony publicity they desperately needed.

I think the Bob Dylan thing is a trap, I mean look at the last attempt to bring his music to Broadway The Times They Are a-Changin'  which was a 60 performance flop and came off of Twyla Tharp having a HUGE hit with Movin Out

the fact is this show apart from a few moments is a dreary and sad show which I don't think audiences really want right now, do you want to pay $200 for a show thats going to bum you out, or something like COMPANY?

Bob Dylan, covid, and dreariness aside... it's also just not very good. It has moments because of the strength of the cast. But the book is weak and the songs don't propel the story. That's before you get into the questionable depiction of neurodivergence and how seems to handle race both confidently and uncomfortably. It feels like aesthetics over substance.

Damnit!   I'll be in the city the week before this re-opens. Not sure if I can swing another trip.   Grrrr.

I guess they’re hoping it gets Tony nominations and can have slightly better sales through that period? I don’t think sales will be THAT much better tho.

The real slap in the face would be if this misses a Best Musical nom, which is very possible.

Financially speaking, the show is a flop—plain and simple.

People like to throw the term “flop” around as if it’s always representative of the quality of the show. But remember that for every “In My Life”, there’s a “Caroline or Change”.

Ah yes, the life-affirming explosion of joy that is Company.

I had mostly negative feelings about this show when I saw it - thought the book in particular was a mess. The music has grown on me since then, in the vacuum of the cast recording where it's free from the muddled attempt at a plot. I loved Luba Mason and I hope she gets nominated, but I doubt I'll be going back.

Tell me you're a producer/affiliated on another show and are a hater WITHOUT telling me you're a producer/affiliated with another show. People on this board can be so miserable. LOL

This is smart producing with some deep pockets. And luck: the Belasco remained empty long enough. Will it get Tony nominations? Yes. Best Musical? Likely. Go back and read the reviews, folks. Flying Over Sunset and MJ were this season, and though both have admirers, they weren't as generally well received, in Sunset's case, not even close.  What this does: help with the possibility of a tour and certainly adds coveted award recognition street cred for subsidiary rights, always a goal. It's hard to believe that it won't have nominees on all of the acting categories, even if they all lose the Tony (likely, too--and I saw that as a huge admirer of this production).

I'm speaking only in factual, financial terms –– regardless of the quality of the show, the show was not able to draw in a substantial enough audience.

And I have no affiliation with any Bway shows this season :)

Just to add on why this has more of a chance over a show like MJ at best musical, whether you believe it or not MJ comes with a ton of baggage that I think is enough to deter nominators and voters from rewarding it. Hopefully they don’t take that baggage out on the talent. Cuz they surely deserve the nominations, like Myles Frost

I would also add that North Country is possibly the most in line with the TYPE of musical that has been winning the Tony these past few years. They tend to go for the more serious, artsy, critically-acclaimed musicals, usually transfers from Off-Broadway. I've always said the show has a "Once" meets "Band's Visit" vibe, both of which won Best Musical.

A Strange Loop fits the bill too, and at this point I'd probably argue that A Strange Loop has a better shot than GFTNC. But before that, I think GFTNC had a decent shot, especially back in 2020 when it first intended to compete, against somewhat weaker competition (though not much weaker).

Agreed and not to make it about race, but given that award shows are having a "so white" moment still, I think that puts the edge to A Strange Loop. But we'll see.

So what’s happening to TKAM that was scheduled to start June 1st? And I hope Girl gets at least a proshot and an actual final performance

Does anyone believe MJ has a serious shot at Best Musical? This is not a Wicked vs Avenue Q kind of season.

I mean, "A Strange Loop" also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a few other awards from its acclaimed off-Broadway run, but sure, it has an advantage because of... race. *eye roll emoji*

That and "Six" have a much better chance at Best Musical over "Girl From The North Country," a show that has glorious musical arrangements with a plot and energy that don't live up to it. It's a shoe-in for Best Orchestrations, and I'd love to see some nominations for the cast, but I don't think it stands a chance to WIN Best Musical. Best bet is to do this run for Tony voters, get nominations and maybe some prizes, and launch a tour next season.

Yes it is... SIX has the popularity, A Strange Loop is more artsy and has all the raves. Unfortunately, North Country is at a disadvantage now because its jukebox musical status makes it less "original," per se.

I'm betting that there will be enough Tony Voters who REALLY dislike Strange Loop to turn it into a SIX vs MJ contest. They want tourist driven shows that will bring people back to Broadway, not "niche" artsy shows.
