I mean, "A Strange Loop" also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a few other awards from its acclaimed off-Broadway run, but sure, it has an advantage because of... race. *eye roll emoji*
That and "Six" have a much better chance at Best Musical over "Girl From The North Country," a show that has glorious musical arrangements with a plot and energy that don't live up to it. It's a shoe-in for Best Orchestrations, and I'd love to see some nominations for the cast, but I don't think it stands a chance to WIN Best Musical. Best bet is to do this run for Tony voters, get nominations and maybe some prizes, and launch a tour next season."
Just being honest. Not discrediting it at all as I'm sure it's a wonderful show given all the accolades, and I'd be very surprised if it doesn't win. Just hope it can find an audience. But just saying, optics are optics. And in 2022 that's what people are thinking about when it comes to stuff like this. Can deny it all you want, but sadly it's not all about artistic merit.
I find it extremely hard to believe that anything other than A Strange Loop all be sweeping the Tonys.
Mare Winningham will definitely be nominated and most likely win a Tony for this show.

You would be wrong.

Up against Sharon D. Clarke? I doubt it. While Caroline, or Change already ended its limited run back in January, keep in mind that rules were put into place in 2019 where only those who've confirmed to have seen all the nominees in a specific category can vote for the winner. So there is hope for Clarke to prevail.

We will see Tony night but Book, Score, Musical, and Actor are all locks in my mind.

That was the same feeling folks had about Tonya Pinkins. I don't think we can ever rule out the politics and the business side of the Tonys. One of the reasons producers wanted this to reopen was so folks could see Mare. She is an industry vet known for the quality of her work, her lack of ego and her work ethic. She does a lot of small theatre projects she believes in. She's an actor's actor known by most in the industry. They may reward the career. It happens all the time.

I just want the pro shot released.
Put the book on my list. It was the last show I saw before the shutdown.
I saw the tour around this time last year and surprisingly enjoyed myself. If you went into it expecting a typical musical I could understand being let down. I treated it like a radio play and the stories as newspaper clippings from around the time of the Great Depression. I also really fell for the actor who played Gene Laine, Ben Biggers. I hope he books something else soon.

Fascinating reading the Tony predictions at the top of this page. I knew neither Winningham nor Clarke won, but honestly couldn't remember who had and had to look it up. Hard to believe it's been three years.
