Ditto for Spelling Bee It is probably the underdog--but it's got my love and my vote!!!
I am a huge fan of William Finn, and just feel like he is always pushed aside...I think it would be amazing if Spelling Bee could win the award!

Sadly, I don't think Spelling Bee's score got the critical acclaim it deserved--but I am excited for everyone associated with the show for recieving a Grammy nomination.
We can always hope for an upset---Afterall it is the little show that could!!!!
I really think Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is the most deserving candidate. I really think Yazbek deserved that Tony. As well as Piazza is produced and performed, I'd like to see Ghostlight win something and I'd really like to see that score reconized.
Spamalot can go to hell in my opinion. It's a piece of crap.
Maybe the judges will have some sense. If PIAZZA doesn't win, I'll ignite they're eyes until they're blinded! Then they will bear the full brunt of my RAAAAGGGGGEEE!!!!

I hope Piazza gets it! But considering that Monty Python is a household name, I definitly agree with the rest of you who said that Spamalot will likely take the award.
I hope DRS gets it. Yazbak deserves recognition & it is the most listenable ( repeat) of all of them
Yazbeck has written one other show. He has said himself he doesn't even want to be considered a composer of musicals. But he's found a niche in musical theater that's making him a lot of money, so I think we'll be hearing more from Yazbeck. And besides, Scoundrels works better on stage than on CD. I like him, don't get me wrong. I don't know Full Monty very well though. Maybe he should be writing The Princess Bride musical :P But I guess he's hardly payed his dues to "deserve" any awards.
I mean I'm not saying Guettel has had 80 shows that have been looked over, but Piazza's a really good score. It deserved what it got, and it deserves this too. I think it will outlive both Dirty Rotten and Spamalot.
I'm such a shill for Light in the Piazza :P But if you prefer Cabaret pastiche songs (DRS) to really really good music that works really well for background music, than that's you.
DRS is musical comedy as its best, Light is more operatic but still good

What's the cut off date for the 2005 nominations? In other words by when did the CD have to be released to fall into 2005 rather than 2006?

Hopefully either Spamalot or DRS will win it as these are great shows. I hate Hair with a passion:)
Im hoping for DRS or Bee.

People who vote for the Grammys aren't required to listen to the nominees, so the most well known titles generally win. Remember when Riverdance won in this category?

Go Piazza....
but on another note, the Michigan State CHildren's Choir was nominated for two Grammys, which I'm currently apart of right now.
GO MSUCC!
Sorry... threadjack.
Agree w Roxy that DRS is the most enjoyable but PIAZZA is an excellent score & technically well recorded. Still, also agree it's gonna go to the SPAMinator.
Honestly, who the hell cares??? It's the GRAMMYS! Any award that can hand out like 130 of them a year is just ridiculous.
I defy anyone to tell me the difference between record of the year and album of the year - and why in God's name anyone should care.
This award is COMPLETELY meaningless.

wow, too much negativity about SPAMALOT! it in my opinion deserves the award, i mean, its enjoyable, funny, and has some good songs (any song with sara ramirez in unbelievable)
so yeah, yall, i hope spamalot wins.
so there.
"I defy anyone to tell me the difference between record of the year and album of the year"
I know you probably weren't looking for an answer, but I'll give one anyway. Album of the Year is for an entire album, while Record of the Year is for an individual song. The difference between Record of the Year and Song of the Year is that the former is based on the overall sound of the recording, with awards going to the performer[s] and producer[s] of the winning song, while the latter is awarded based on songwriting and is given to the writer[s] of the song.

PIAZZA. Much love. And luck.
This is a bit off topic, but I did a search for it and found nothing... why isn't the Rent Soundtrack up for any Grammys?
The eligibility time is for recordings released during the Eligibility Year October 1, 2004 through September 30, 2005 and not all of the film/motion picture categories have to be new music.

I was also wondering about RENT. I'm pulling for Hair. What a great album. Yay for Seth!
