I agree.
The Kirkpatricks have won a Song of the Year Grammy and have written for a number of country artists. They have a lot of friends in the ARA so it's not surprising that Something Rotten was nominated over some of the other choices.
Surprised that Something Rotten snuck in since their album wasn't that impressive, I suppose it's album sales helped.
If Hamilton wasn't in it, Fun Home probably would have won. They should probably just be glad that it's just a Grammy and not the Tonys.
Not a big shock that Hamilton didn't get nom for AOTY, it was a longshot to begin with. Not really sure which album could be described as 80s pop. Taylor Swift's?

Oh come on, this isn't a Drake album. I doubt when LMM announced that his next project would be a rap/R&B musical about Alexander Hamilton that many people expected it to have the widespread appeal that it has had.
I haven't seen the other Grammy news but just reading this thread has depressed me a bit. Very sad Hamilton wasn't nominated for Album of the Year (especially considering the lackluster 12 months these Grammy's are covering). And then this category...there were some great musical theater albums this year, apparently the nominating parties didn't get a chance to listen to them. On the Town, On the 20th Century and The Visit should have been nominated over Something Rotten!, The King and I and An American in Paris. the three that were nominated were all underwhelming in my opinion. Just goes to show how little the Grammy's respect the field of cast recordings.

Well, everyone else is Non-Stop in listening to Hamilton. Well just Wait for it, and if you miss the broadcast, no need to say What did I Miss?We all know that it's Aaron Burr, Sir, Alexander Hamilton and The Schuyler Sisters telling The Story of (that) Tonight. In the Room Where it Happens, they will Blow us All Away, leaving us Helpless.
I appoligise for any spelling mistakes. I may be on my mobile. Clumsy fingers and small little touchscreen keys don't mixx. I try to spellcheck, but I may miss something.
I would have hoped that between Gigi, On the Town, and On the Twentieth Century, at least one of those albums would get nominated. I thought The King and I had the weakest recording out of all the revivals this season.

I agree that The Visit belongs in this category, especially in the place of Something Rotten!. It's my favorite cast recording of the previous Broadway season and a phenomenal recording of a terrific Kander and Ebb score.

Hamilton references various genres of music (not just rap and hip hop but even other musical references can be found throughout). However, the content of the songs is unique. I believe the initial reference to the liking "recycled 80's pop music" was in reference that much of the music found in the AOTY category sounds a lot like what we've already heard before (at least that's my understanding...not entirely sure I agree).

I'm always confused when Taylor Swift claims that her album was "inspired" by 80's pop; her songs all sound like generic, bubble gum pop that you hear on the radio today. (Yet sadly, the chances of her winning this year are high. Ugh.)
I'll take Hamilton as my own personal Album of the Year, thanks.

Assuming that Hamilton wins, who will actually get a Grammy besides LMM? Since they changed the rules with the year that Beautiful won, and the Grammy doesn't only go to the songwriters, but also the lead performer(s).
And that's also where the Grammy for Cast Albums matters more now. Now that performers get it as well, it counts towards the EGOT for them...

The people who produced the album will win the award. Add me into the group that is scratching their heads at The Visit and OTTC not getting nominated. They honestly just seemed to pick the most successful shows of the year.
I'm defending the guy who loves Fun Home. It's a beautiful and heartfelt score.
I can't even listen to Hamilton past a few songs It's just horrible. Of course I have no interest in seeing it, the clips I've seen just look cheesy. It sounds like Broadway-ized rap music for White people who don't like and would never listen to real rap in the first place.

Lol I feel bad for you, feeling that way about Hamilton. But obviously Fun Home is a wonderful score and it's a good recording, but the show really comes to life on stage. Hamilton is both a phenomenal score and a fantastic recording. If Hamilton weren't eligible this year I'd agree that Fun Home probably should have won.

wow, that's a lot of people who qualify for principle soloist! Nothing against any one of them, but that seems a bit much. I'm glad the actors get the Grammy as well, but shouldn't it be limited to 2-3 performers, who carry the most weight?
I just checked and they've been doing it since 2012, there were always just one (Beautiful) or two (Once, Kinky Boots, Book of Mormon) soloist, who got the Grammy... But then all the shows went a bit crazy this year. In the past eben the nominated shows never had more than 3 people listed (except Matilda, because of the 4 Matildas), but this year they all include the featured actors (e.g. Heidi Blickenstaff in SR is clearly not a lead, she has one song...) I wonder if the Grammys changed the rules again?
^ whoa...that's an insane number of people. The rules had to have changed, and I think for the worse. That's kind of ridiculous. For 'Beautiful' wasn't it only Jessie Mueller?? I was thinking yesterday that it would be Lin, Leslie, and maybe Phillipa Soo, but damn that's kind of going overboard.
