Mamma Rose was the first that popped into my head...followed very closely by Mrs. Lovett after I wrote that phrase.

I wouldn't say that there is one character who is THE greatest, but there definatly are a few that are great:
Mama Rose
Mrs. Lovett
Margaret Johnson
Fanny Brice
Charity
Roxie Hart
Velma Kelly
Anita
Lola
Effie Melody White
Elphaba (no, I don't think that she's "the greatest", but I think she's one of the better female characters in modern musical theater...)

Elphaba is clearly the greatest female character in the history of musical theatre (nay, quite possibly in the history of literature as we know it). Every other Greatest Female Character in Theatre list we've had this week has proven the same, and if you look back at the numerous similiar threads from the past month, you'll find they all come to prove that Elphaba is the greatest. While Mama Rose comes close at times with some generous nods to Mrs. Lovett (but only when Patti plays her), Elphaba always wins. I finally feel comfortable enough to admit the truth, which I realize now I have always known but been to scared to recognize. Excuse me while I change my nickname to ElphabaRulz. I hope it isn't taken.
