During Adam and Anthony's run at RENT (towards the end) people were being told to use another stairwell to the mezzanine. I was in standing room so I was right by the exit doors and the fire department came and apparently someone had a heart attack and died.
I was sitting in the Mezz and it was very annoying having all those distractions through out the show. Especially right before Rose's Turn, because it really took away from the scene work. Everyone kept looking up at the balcony to see what had happened... anyway- the show:
If anyone saw it at City Center- VERY LITTLE was changed. Some blocking.. some costumes (mainly Patti's) Other than that- it is the same show.
Some pacing issues, and definately the feel of a first public preview.. the show will only get better as it goes on...
LuPone is amazing.. a slightly different take on Rose this time around... more noticeable in the second act... pre and post Rose's Turn.
Benanti was awesome, she can definitely sell the STRIP number.. But her scene work at City Center seemed better for some reason.
Gaines- amazing.. as always.. amazing scenes, especially those with LuPone.
"GYPSY disaster - spoilers. Posted by: keys88 01:09 am EST 03/04/08
Saw the first preview of 'Gypsy' tonight.
It is outstanding.
The disaster I refer to is a ceiling vent in the balcony that fell on a poor girls head right before 'Rose's Turn'. A freak accident but scary. (The last time I was at the St. Jame's a man had a diabetic attack and they had to stop the show - 'Producers'. For everyone's safety I have decided to stop seeing shows at this theatre.) She was a few seats down and quite literally didn't know what hit her. They eventually took her out and after the show she was walking around and seemed all right."

yes, it was scary, and hard to deal with, because one part of your mind is saying " Oh my God! is she bleeding? that vent is so big! perhaps she needs medical attention!?" and the other part is saying " everyone just SHUT UP Roses Turn is about to START!!!!!" but she looked fine after the show and there was no blood on her.
PLEASE! Do not post anything negative or dramatic! DidYouReallyHearMe has LOST the ability to ignore such posts and he will comment! Please, help him.
With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-

I saw it crash down on her. Literally fall from the top, to where she was (in the 2nd row from the front, house right side, about 5 seats in). It didn't look like the picture shown above, but it did make a very large crash. It was a huge commotion, as everyone was saying, and Patti looked pissed that people were looking up at the balcony and not paying attention to her.
But if I were the cast of Gypsy, I'd take it as a good sign. Literally brought the house down!
"and Patti looked pissed that people were looking up at the balcony and not paying attention to her."
No Patti would never be like that, i mean come on she is such a warm and caring person...i find this hard to belive...Lies i tell you Lies!!
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

Not only would it be the right thing to do to invite her back with the royal treatment, it would be in their best interests to avoid a lawsuit.
That (and the Rent story) reminds me of a question I had this weekend--I wonder how many people die in the average Broadway theater in a year? I mean you've got 1,000 people in there for 400 performances, that's 400,000 patrons in a theater over the course of the year, with an average age greater than that of the average person. Oddly enough, what sparked this question was an 80 year old woman that fell asleep next to me during "Is He Dead?" Irony?
What a crazy night in the audience *sighs* Sounds just as crazy as it was onstage. I hope the woman is OK.
Glad to hear the show itself is/was amazing. I knew it would be.
Katherine McPhee was probably in the audience because she wants to be ready to step in for Laura. God love Laura, I know I do, but the poor woman has a pretty unhappy track record- not all of it her own fault or doing. I wish her well and I know she'll try just as she always does.

Can NOT wait to hear Patti's take on last night's 1st preview. She's keen on everything that is taking place during one of her performances (she sees it ALL from the stage). Her comments about audience members at SWEENEY TODD are little gems.
And I thought I was special for being there the night Patti kicked the playbill into the audience.

Brody,
I would LOVE to see what she has to say about the performance and all the hijinks in the audience!
Can you direct a girl to the best place to keep watch for Patti's comments?
If I were that patron, I'd sue Patti. You know it was her vibrato that shook the vent loose.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
