That is correct. He only signs Playbills, no posters/windowcards. One person handed him a stack of like 6 Playbills, and he took them all and signed all six, and handed them back, but one person across from me with one poster... no posters, sorry.
I suggest you go back and read sciencegirl's edit in which she explains her final comment about the show. You managed the Jane Street Theatre and saw everyone who played Hedwig in the original production. Great. You have strong feelings about the show. Great.
On the other hand, from the time the Broadway production was announced you have been casting doubts. You objected to it being done on Broadway. You objected to NPH as Hedwig. You have the right to your opinion. The problem I have is your comments make you sound like a fangirl.
It was John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask's choice to have their show done on Broadway. It was their choice to have NPH play Hedwig.
This production won't get a fair hearing from you because you'll walk into the theatre with you mind made-up.
Yeah, if I didn't have a signed Jane Street poster and a signed movie poster already, I wouldn't have gone for the trifecta. I only wish someone had mentioned the no poster ruling previously, as I would have just bagged it. heh.
My guess would be that apart from checking ticket stubs (which I once saw at another show -- they would only let people with ticket stubs into the "pens" outside the stage door), the closest he can get to knowing that he's signing for people who specifically saw the show is by signing Playbills only. That doesn't explain why he signed 6 for one person (unless it was a group of people who handed them all together). But as someone posted above, a lot of the stars don't want to indulge the professional autographs hounds that park themselves at the stage door night after night with other memorabilia featuring the same actor, so by drawing the line at Playbills, he at least increases the likelihood that he's signing for someone who actually saw the show. Not a perfect system and not foolproof by any means. But I kinda see the "logic" (of sorts).

They make people who aren't attending that night's how go behind the barricade further away from the theater (Bette Midler did the same thing), and he does seem to spend more time on that side of the gates with people who were at that night's show.
That said, people on the side I was on often had more requests for selfies and one had NPH ask a girl out to the prom for him on video, and he did all of those things. So, it has to be about autograph hounds, since signing a poster is less of a time commitment than posing for pictures and such.
They said he can't sign posters since if he starts doing that, he'd have to sign "everything," but that doesn't make any sense, really.
The selfie crowd were asking me what the "Angry Inch" was, who everyone coming out the stage door was, etc., and they seemed to have a full itinerary of what stage doors they were planning to hit all week to take pictures of actors who are performing in shows they aren't seeing?!
I honestly didn't see any professional autograph hounds there. Although anyone who said one was there probably thinks it was me, heh.
"They make people who aren't attending that night's how go behind the barricade further away from the theater "
It makes sense I guess, but what if you waited on the night you saw the show with no luck? You will just have to keep coming back, hoping he gets to you? That seems likes such a a waste of time, and really unrealistic for most people.
NPH more than took his time signing Playbills. There were people out in the street behind his car and such with Playbills who he didn't get to, but people inside the barricades all seem to get their stuff signed.
As for him taking more time on the theater side, more of them had playbills. More people on my side wanted high fives, selfies, etc., since many weren't at the show. So, the other side sort of deserves more NPH, having bought tickets and all, heh. But if I had brought my Playbill, there'd've been no issue getting it signed easily, and I showed up 10 minutes before the end of the show, and I was at the front of the rail. I imagine more people will fill that up as school lets out and it gets warmer.
Whats "unrealistic" is delaying actors (in ANY show) from going straight to SLEEP after acting their guts out. They're TIRED. But they try and be appreciative by spending a few minutes with the fans. Security is also a BIG issue now.
I'm NOT dissing anyone for "stagedooring", but try and understand that it's not an OBLIGATION of any actor. They have time constraints and are trying to oblige. I don't think any accountants come home from their 10 hour day at the office, faced with hundreds of people at their apt door screaming for an autograph! lol. (you get my point...)
Yes, we know, everyone says that in every thread upon every reference to stagedooring.
I wasn't upset that he didn't sign my poster, but moreso that I was the first one to report back on the no poster signing policy. Had I read it here prior, I'd've skipped going last night entirely, as well as owning a $20 poster of NPH's face signed by a lot of people who aren't him, heh.
Tiny, I couldn't agree more. I have never stage doored, and never will. Their obligation ended the minute they walked off the stage. I would never delay anyone, or want to keep them from their personal life, and I just think it's really weird that a lot of people expect that from an actor. Some act like it's part of the ticket they bought. Entitlement is gross.
Theater is about what happens on stage and NOT what happens at the stage door.

MARGO: Autograph fiends! They're not people - those little beasts who run in packs like coyotes. They're nobody's fans! They're juvenile delinquents, mental defectives! They're nobody's audience! They never see a play or a movie, even--they're never indoors long enough!
I know we all roll our eyes when people try to make Tony predictions (myself included), but I haven't seen much talk on the board about NPH's chances for a nomination. Based on the preview performances, how likely do y'all think it is that he will be nominated or win? Seems to me that his only competition could be Jefferson Mays or Ramin Karimloo, but I could be way off track.
I thought I had seen a lot of comments that NPH was indeed a frontrunner?
I enjoy stagedooring if I actually want to thank the performers for their performance or quickly comment on it, but omg I think the worst thing is to have people who didn't see the show there, blatantly just wanting to meet famous people. That is where I draw the line for rudeness.
Came from this evening's show and NPH really rocked it. Lena Hall was spectacular as well. I guess he was only interested in only giving the guys some lovin' tonight (I was in seat BB3 and another girl was in BB1) so the guy in A1 won out with the "humping." Some guy a couple of rows back, center orch, aisle seat got the kiss. He was also doing the ad-libbing thing when some lady came late. The water spitting was almost at full blast at 1 guy in the front row… pretty hilarious.
Stage door was definitely a mad house - NPH and LH were so gracious and took their time signing.
Honestly, never heard of Hedwig before and this thread definitely piqued my interest in the show. I've only seen a few youtube videos as research but now, I think it's so fantastic, I'd love to see it again!!
I was at tonight's show too. Left Orch Row A, Seat 5. Right behind you, MX888! The guy who got the 'car wash' was right on the aisle seat in my row. The seat was labeled partial view, but the only thing you don't see is the drummer. What a show, what a performance by Neil Patrick Harris. Lena Hall was fantastic as well. I loved hearing the score live. I feel like this is one of those shows you really need to see up close or at least from the front row of the Mezz. 'The Origin of Love' was so beautiful and I can only imagine how amazing it looks from the Mezz. I definitely have to see the show again!
^^ Hi rocker05.. so nice to "meet" a fellow BWWer. I totally agree that 'The Origin of Love' beautiful and was visually spectacular. I'm still in awe with the whole production. I don't know how NPH will sustain his energy when he has 2 shows at 7 and 10pm with such little rest time in between.
sorry to cross post on this, but if I want to get my playbill signed can I send it to the theatre? Would I need to send both Neil and Lena one each, or is there someone I can send one copy to asking if both could sign?
Also, who has the lyrics to 'Love Theme from Hurt Locker'?!
I know many who won't sign posters or, sometimes, anything. The items end up being sold on ebay because their signatures are worth money and that's annoying. Some are adept at differentiating between a true fan and a user and will sign accordingly.
