Jay*- I loved those guys on In Living Color! I couldn't wait to see their sketches. "Two snaps in a circle" "HAAATED it". Men on films. They totally cracked me up! Thanks for the memories! mom
I said not Phantom and Wicked because I don't think they are HIGHLY acclaimed. Both opened to mixed reviews as I recall... I mean shows that are widely accepted by critics and audiences as classics or "modern classics." Shows in which there is really no debate--so it is even more shocking to dislike them. I believe that sometimes things just rub us the wrong way, no matter how smart or good they are. Sometimes we just don't like something, and it has nothing to do with just wanting to have a different opinion from everyone else.
First thing that came to mind was Spamalot. I thought it was, by far, the weakest of the four Best Musical nominees that season, and I was very disappointed when it won.
"It does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are 20 gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket, nor breaks my leg."

West Side Story, while a couple of the songs are nice. I find the whole show a struggle to sit thru.
Rent, If Larson had not died the show would have closed off braodway( there you go i said it...let the hate begin!)
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

rosscoe(au)- I think about that sometimes, I almost fell asleep during Rent.
Broadway Shows I've Seen: Hairspray, Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors (2003), The Wedding Singer, Spamalot, Riverdance, Rent, Beauty and the Beast, Spring Awakening, Wicked, Legally Blonde, Phantom of the Opera, Sweet Charity (revival), Drowsy Chaperone, The Lion King, Dreamgirls(2010 Tour).
The Color Purple for me as well. That recording is unbearable for me.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I have to say, for me, both Grey Gardens (Ebersole and especially MLW were amazing, but I don't see why people think it should have won more Tonys) and Spring Awakening (loved the recording long before I saw the show, and while there was a lot to love about it - Gallagher, the lighting, some of the score - the show as a whole left me cold).
"Who is Stephen Sondheim?" -roninjoey "The man who wishes he had written Phantom of the Opera!" - SueleenGay
Although we have are pride, we have been known to cast for food.

"One more outburst from you sir and I bludgeon you to death with this microphone"
The Wedding Singer
"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"
Pab-yeah The Color Purple, I'm not a fan of that people say is "a great show"
And I wasn't a fan of Piazza either.
"That's a good point. Next time I pee on a Starbucks couch and throw straws and napkins at a barista, I'll just yell, "YOU DON'T KNOW ME OUTSIDE OF STARBUCKS! YOU DON'T KNOW ME AT ALL!" and that should do it. "-LizzieCurry
Shows that got all favourable reviews and no mixed or negative notices:
BRIGADOON A CHORUS LINE GUYS & DOLLS HELLO DOLLY! HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING THE MUSIC MAN MY FAIR LADY SOUTH PACIFIC WONDERFUL TOWN
BYE BYE BIRDIE and CAROUSEL should be here except each gone 1 mixed review. SWEENEY TODD got one negative review - unfortunately in the New York Times!
Here's a sad fact: No musical in the last 20 yers has gotten universal praise although AVENUE Q and SPRING AWAKENING both came pretty close.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks." Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!''
Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'
