yes I know they're Rodgers and Hammerstein classics but I could CARE LESS. I hate the music and the plots, frankly bore me to tears.
Cats is the most overrated show of all time.
"We need people not to come to Broadway shows wearing shorts and flip-flops. We are working hard up here folks. Find a pair of socks."-Joanna Gleason
"I hear L. Ron Hubbard is gonna blow the ladies...and all that jazz! C'mon babe! We're gonna unicorn hug, I bought some NyQuil down....at Wal-Mart?!"-Bebe Neuwirth singing ATJ to Musical Mad Libs at DQYNJ :)
I've always thought "Rent" was incredibly overrated. I saw the original cast just after it opened on Broadway and I couldn't believe how dreadful it was, especially since I had read all of the hype and was certain I was going to love it.
Words cannot express how much I abhor Grease in every incarnation.
Love Rodgers and Hammerstein and I love the songs from the show, but I deeply dislike the story in Oklahoma.
Now, mother always said that whenever you hear a strange, frightening, and potentially life-threatening ghostly chant coming from the dark woods that there's one thing that you should do: Not wake the others and go investigate it alone...
I'm seeing a lot of shows here that weren't particularly "acclaimed," just popular more than anything else, stuff like CATS and MAMMA MIA.
If we're talking about Highly Acclaimed, as in award-winning and well-reviewed, the most wildly over-rated things I can think of are DOUBT and that monument to Over-Hypedness: THE HISTORY BOYS, two of the most useless evenings I've ever spent in the theatre.
"If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about the answers." Thomas Pynchon, GRAVITY'S RAINBOW
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." Philip K. Dick

Also, Butley (Nathan Lane) was possibly the most horrible, painful night of theater that I have ever experienced. People got up and walked out after 10 minutes when I was there.

This current production of "A Chorus Line". I didn't see the original and I'm sure I'm alone in saying this, but I enjoyed the film more. Maybe it was the fact that I was in the mezz and couldn't see facial expressions, which are an important part of the story, but.........
Les Mis, Phantom, Cats and all the pop operas (Although they didn't get real raves.)- Pretentious and stupid, besides being badly written. I do have a soft spot for Evita, but I can only say I really LOVED it with Patti and Mandy.
Dreamgirls (It didn't get real raves either, except for Frank Rich who I don't often agree with.)- The first act is good, the second act kills it.
Les Miserables All of my friends love it and they sing the songs. NOT FUN. I only like one song- On My Own- because its a pretty song (I'm a sucker for those).
Grease. Since I was in it and didn't have a fun experience, then went to see it on Broadway, I swear, if Matthew Saldivar wasn't in it, I would have tried to leave at intermission.
