RENT
RENT
and RENT.
All this Piazza hate is making me sad. Shows that I don't like:
Avenue Q
Legally Blonde
Spelling Bee
Spring Awakening
Sweeney Todd

The Lion King (everything after "Circle of Life")
Wicked (big disappointment, but not outright hatred)
Phantom (boring)
Les Mis Revival (having never read the book, it felt more Cliff Notes than it had to--felt like I needed a scorecard to keep track of who was who)
Closed:
The Producers (admired the craftsmanship, but the show itself left me cold)
The Sound of Music
The King and I
yes I know they're Rodgers and Hammerstein classics but I could CARE LESS. I hate the music and the plots, frankly bore me to tears.
Cats is the most overrated show of all time.
I've always thought "Rent" was incredibly overrated. I saw the original cast just after it opened on Broadway and I couldn't believe how dreadful it was, especially since I had read all of the hype and was certain I was going to love it.
I'd also have to go with: The Phantom of the Opera, Rent, The Producers

"Phantom" is what immediately sprung to mind.
However, after sitting through another production this evening - and STILL feeling left outside the critical curve - I have to say "Doubt".
Words cannot express how much I abhor Grease in every incarnation.
Love Rodgers and Hammerstein and I love the songs from the show, but I deeply dislike the story in Oklahoma.

I'm seeing a lot of shows here that weren't particularly "acclaimed," just popular more than anything else, stuff like CATS and MAMMA MIA.
If we're talking about Highly Acclaimed, as in award-winning and well-reviewed, the most wildly over-rated things I can think of are DOUBT and that monument to Over-Hypedness: THE HISTORY BOYS, two of the most useless evenings I've ever spent in the theatre.

Also, Butley (Nathan Lane) was possibly the most horrible, painful night of theater that I have ever experienced. People got up and walked out after 10 minutes when I was there.

This current production of "A Chorus Line". I didn't see the original and I'm sure I'm alone in saying this, but I enjoyed the film more. Maybe it was the fact that I was in the mezz and couldn't see facial expressions, which are an important part of the story, but.........

Les Miserables
Hairspray
I found both to be overrated, didn't like the storylines and couldn't care less about the characters.
Rent and Spring Awakening- Groundbreaking my ass!
Les Mis, Phantom, Cats and all the pop operas (Although they didn't get real raves.)- Pretentious and stupid, besides being badly written.
I do have a soft spot for Evita, but I can only say I really LOVED it with Patti and Mandy.
Dreamgirls (It didn't get real raves either, except for Frank Rich who I don't often agree with.)- The first act is good, the second act kills it.
There are a few others too.
THE PRODUCERS
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRALS
LES MISERABLES
They all bored me. Also, I'm sort of afraid to see PHANTOM or any Disney show--somehow I've survived without seeing any of them.
Les Miserables
All of my friends love it and they sing the songs.
NOT FUN.
I only like one song- On My Own- because its a pretty song (I'm a sucker for those).
Grease.
Since I was in it and didn't have a fun experience, then went to see it on Broadway, I swear, if Matthew Saldivar wasn't in it, I would have tried to leave at intermission.
South pacific- walked out at intermission- very boring
Cats- Don't like the animal and couldn't stand the show. Why this was critically aclaimed and lasted so long on Broadway is beyond me.

I honestly haven't really disliked anything, but I didn't care for "The Boy From Oz" or this particular production of "Chicago".
