I was thinking about Evita today and how Webber's work all went downhill from there and remembered something almost disturbing about the concept album.
Throughout the album, the character of Che begins spouting out nonsense about this insecticide he is creating. To make matters worse, at the conclusion of the bitter "Actress Hasn't Learned the Lines You Like to Hear" he begins begging Evita to fund his bug spray. I can only imagine what this would have looked like onstage.
Thank God for Hal Prince, huh?
Any other moments that were cut that were changed for the better? I'm sure if I thought about it, I could think of more.
Some of the original songs from RENT were truly atrocious...including Right Brain (One Song Glory but different, awful words), and Real Estate. So glad these were changed/cut.
Although the song isn't bad, Can That Boy Foxtrot pales in comparsion to I'm Still Here.
That moment before Gaston falls off the castle when He and the Beast kiss.
Ewwww.
The Pirate Queen in Chicago.
In FOLLIES, both Sally and Phyllis were supposed to sing "Losing My Mind." Alexis Smith told Sondheim she wasn't much of a singer but she had great legs, so she said he should let Dorothy Collins sing all of "Losing My Mind" and give her a number that showed off her legs...Hence, we got "Losing My Mind" as one of the most powerful torchy solos in a musical AND we got "The Story of Lucy and Jessie," a great number for Phyllis.
I really dislike "Can That Boy Foxtrot," glad it's gone.
the scene talked about in the Avenue Q book where Rod gives Princeton a blo*job. (can I say that?) I think it says that it was just an idea that never made it to the page, but yikes! that would have been odd. especially since they're both voiced by the same actor.

Hm..maybe the actors...but not the puppets..
If that is real I am glad they cut that from the show...that would have been majorly awkward.
i think the re-wroking of RENT (ala not starting from where Angel dies) was a good idea.
Topics that make you go...
HMMMMMM......

Personally, "Boom, Crunch" from "Into the Woods" NEEDED to go..."Last Midnight" is musically more interesting, and fits the theme better.
THe three little pigs in "Into The Woods"
While "Dancing Through Life" is by no means a theatrical masterpeice...the alternative "Which Way To The Party" sends shivers down my spine it was so bad.
And on that note "Wizard and I" is far superior to "Making Good"

Oh gosh, I have heard Which Way To The Party...there are no words.

I actually liked "Which Way" better...and yes "Wizard and I" is TONS better than "Making Good" as is the not using the Scarecrow to sing "No One Mourns the Wicked"

Okay, I actually asked Jeff Marx about this over Myspace about a month or two ago and he explained it all to me. It's not really as awkward as it seems, but it still is a tad awkward. I would post the message that he sent me, but I have dial-up and it would take forever to go and find the letter.
There was a song in the previews of THE WEDDING SINGER that got cut and was replaced by "Someday". It was a dreadful and BORING song. I'm very glad they cut it out.
Also, I'm glad about some lyric re-writes in THE FROGS for the broadway production.
Im glad they cut the intermission of every one act play that directors try to stretch into two.
Johnny the drunk in High Fidelity...he became TMPMITW. TMPMITW was far funnier and a much stronger character.
Unfortunately, they cut the song Wonderful Love (good song, didn't quite fit perfectly) after Boston and the song that they replaced it with was terrible.
ive heard they cut the scene in PIRATE QUEEN where Grania gives birth and then immediately fights off the British. Though it really happened, most people found it unbelievable, and the way it was depicted was truly laughable.

In Chicago, the song "Nowadays" replaced a song that was light and silly. Nowadays is a more substantial song.
oh god Right Brain is hysterical in an awful kind of way.
"Step On Up" is a song that was originally supposed to be in Hairspray where "I Know Where Ive Been" is and I cant imagine it working.
"Sister Act" from SISTER ACT
....and definitely Right Brain, Real Estate, etc
There's a whole series of cd's called Lost In Boston that is made up of songs cut on the road from many musicals.
Some of them include:
Apple Tree
Little Shop
Sweet Charity
Fiddler
110 In The Shade
Chicago
Once On This Island
to name only a few.
Check 'em out!
