It really gets me when people argue that the show is good because it addresses issues like bullying, tolerance of gay students, and unity amongst students in the high school environment. I don't think there is one person who will disagree that the show promotes these themes. However, just because it does this does NOT make it a good show. It makes it a bad show with a good message. If people think it's a good show and want to argue that, that's fine. Just don't argue it's a good show because it has a good message. There's no logic to that. The plot, characters, and songs they use to illustrate these ideas are just plain annoying and ridiculous IMO.
That's my rant.

Meh, it's exactly what I expected from a Ryan Murphy show--a headwriter who has proven he always loses all control over his show. A good/decent first season (or first half season) and then charactes acting out of character, doing the same thing constantly, weird mixed double messages (does he think teens should drink or not? have sex or not? is it ok to mock the creepy Jew but not ok to mock other Jews or other minorities?) and absolutely no sese of direction (he's admitted proudly that he breaks up and puts couples together when he gets bored). He should let his shows be run by someone else--Nip/Tuck was always over the top, but its first season it seemed to knwo what it was doing--by the end it was just unwatchable.

That said, I enjoy the production numbers more often than not, and I keep watching. Meh.

AND, I actually kinda do hate how now it seems trendy for everyone to say that they USED to like Glee, like somehow that's a cool bragging right too.

It really is an astoundingly bad show, with occasional moments of brilliance. On this week's episode, the line "My husband is verbally abusive and I've been drinking since noon," brought my house down. But then, there's the rest of the show.

Also kind of tragic that the medium of television has taught us that Matthew Morrison is really only very good from a great distance. This makes me sad.

HA! But it's sadly kinda true. It doesn't help that his character is particularly ill conceived. Is a cool teacher who knows and loves modern music? Or is he in another episode a teacher who only knows dated 70s tunes? Is he smart about human nature? or braindead? Does he care about his students, or barely flinch when he sees one pushed up against a locker?

I used to feel slightly guilty for being a fan of musical theatre and not supporting Glee. I have yet to watch an entire episode and I've only watched two numbers performed on it once.

The only thing that bugged me a little was the robotic autotune and the way a lot of the covers are nothing short of carbon-copied vocal impersonations of the original artist.

Based on what I've seen, it seems like the type of thing not meant to be taken too seriously. Meh, whatev.

I still want to know why the guys sing like chicks, lol.

I was fooled twice in thinking it was some broad, only to discover it was a boy!!! XD

I'm an unashamed lover of the show. People who say it's awful all the time really have no idea what they're talking about. It is consistently awful, to be certain. Yet it's often surprisingly poignant and funny. It's just a really bi-polar show, alternating between awful and great sometimes several times within the same episode. If they could just harness things in, it could be a great show.

The first half of season one was it's high point, unfortunately. It's been largely downhill since, with sporadic episodes that harken back to those episodes.

And I agree with EricMontreal22. This show would likely prosper if Murphy gave up control.

Glee is not without its problems (which were mostly evident in the latter half of the first season) but to call it 'garbage' is nonsense.

It is very well made. It is INCREDIBLY, fundamentally, and pivotally self-aware, both of itself as a piece of television and as a part of pop culture. It is I believe deceptively sophisticated television - both in terms of dramaturgy and content. It is also incredibly queer television; probably the queerest programme ever to become part of the zeitgeist. That in itself is extraordinary.

Of course it’s not realistic, and to complain that the plotting and characters in Glee are inconsistent and not true to life misses the point completely. Of course, everybody's free to not like it, but to accuse it of not being any good? Whaddya talk?

Bipolar is ther perfect word to describe the show. So good at times, so awful at others, especially now.

I appreciate Glee for doing what it has done, and I try not to fault anyone who loves the show. However, I cannot bring myself to listen to that ****ing auto-tuned crap.

I don't tend to read too much into the show or else my head starts to hurt and my mouth tastes like metal.

Granted 90% of Hollywood shows to some degree are like that, so I just sit back and enjoy the ride, and yeah, give or take for the most part Glee isn't that bad of a ride.

Can I ride Matthew Morrisons abs?

Even the people who really love it are aware it's not a consistently good show... or even a consistent show. Its lauded minority characters waver between being token minority characters to realistic human beings whenever the plot needs them to do so. Hardly realistic at all and still mired in stereotype.

"Hating Glee says more about the hater than Glee."

That's actually very true.

For the past couple of years, whenever anyone questions my taste or the validity of my artistic opinions, if I'm not in the mood for a lengthy discussion, I'll say, "Well... 'Glee' is total crap."

And everyone responds the same way: "I'm sorry I ever doubted your judgment."

But MOST television is total crap. The Office- the most critically lauded and consistently popular sitcom is unbearable. Characters do things that are unreasonable, illegal or immoral week after week and yet I don't hear a cacophony of "Real offices are not LIKE that!"

I don't like the The Office, either.

It's not that Glee isn't like a typical high school that bothered me. It's that it has no sense of continuity and consistency and it's in love with its own tweeness. And it autotunes people who are supposed to be singing in a choir room.

I'm always vexed when people decide that after a year or so that now it's gotten to be too much. I watched the post-Super Bowl episode just to see if I still hated it, and it seemed to me that it's exactly the same show it's always been.

Joe, you are absolutely right. "The Office" is also total crap, which is why I do not watch it and would put it right alongside "Glee" in terms of quality, registering many of the same complaints. If there were a thread about "The Office" on this board, I would be saying exactly what you're saying people are not saying because I have said it many times in the past.

The argument that "MOST television is total crap" is not an argument *for* "Glee." Lordy, I hope it isn't.

As usual Phyllis you are dead on. It's the "NOW" that drives me crazy. It has not changed one iota from it's premiere and yet the standard wisdom is that it's gone downhill and is NOT the show it was.

And Growl I couldn't care less how much you hate Glee or the Office or America's Newest Competitive Eater- the point is that only THIS show seems to bring out the crazy haters. It's as if somehow, everyone is forced to have an opinion on this one show. Seriously how many threads has Glee hate engendered? 100? 200?

Back when I used to eviscerate the odious Will & Grace, a friend I love with taste I trust implicitly would say, "Dude, it's just a TV show." It was that same false equivalency created when somebody says, "Well, ALL TV is bad, you're an idiot for liking anything on TV or taking anything seriously at all on TV without first establishing that you are so far above it all, you can't believe anybody with critical faculties would waste them on TELEVISION of all things."

The other night this friend was discussing the greatness of Modern Family when we got into a long discussion on Mitch and Cameron and he added, "Oh, and I get what you meant about Will & Grace now."

It does seem that, in 60 short years, television shows have become the prime topic of discussion for most Americans. Turn off the sets and get outside, folks (like my Dad always said)!

Well that's cause everyone has a TV. And, frankly, I haven't seen a single film in the last, say, five years that has affected me as much as Mad Men. Or scared me as much as The Walking Dead. Or has moved me as much as...yes...Glee.

I think the first two speak for themselves. And I've stated on this site why I love Glee. It remindes me of a time when (sorry Steve) everything was possible and nothing made sense. It reminds of the time when I discovered I was good at something...really good. And that changed everything in my life. Everything. I can tell you without fear of contradiction that, had I not found my voice as a singer and performer, I would not have found the love of my life. It never would have happened. And right now...I'm so grateful that I had that. And Glee reminds me of how it all began.

Someone was right when they said you learn more about the people who hate Glee than the show itself. But it works the other way, too. I recognize all its faults...and it still makes me feel something deeply about myself.

People should feel free to hate on it as loudly as they want. It doesn't take away from my love for it. Cause I know exactly why I love it.
