Saw the last show today..

- plays it a lot more over the top than Tony. Different but still amazing.
-B/c of his presence and just utter rockstar-ishness he makes the show look very small when he's not on stage. I found myself not caring about a lot of stuff i cared about the first show just because he was so electric.
-the audience went insane tonight. he got the entire audience to stand up for him after he performed st. jimmy. only other person who could do that is miz patti.
- really a once in a lifetime event for me. even though i didnt love the show, the fact that he was in it made it one of my all time favorite broadway experiences. loved every second he was there.

I read on ATC that they started doing inserts in addition to the pre-curtain announcement. If anyone has an extra insert they'd be willing to part with, please shoot me a PM.

I was there tonight and didn't get an insert.

Billie Joe was amazing. He just filled the place with energy, and the audience loved it. He added a snippet of a song before "Good Riddance" tonight. Someone posted his lyrics sheet on twitter: http://plixi.com/p/48647624
He also gave away his guitar to a lucky audience member.

Was gonna say, I saw the girl in the lobby with it after the show...the original song was great, as well as the antics during the show.

The guy screaming during the runup to St. Jimmy was less than great, but amusing :).

BTW, I got "partial view" seats for the lotto losers - the reason that I put it in quotes is there was nothing partial about it, except maybe a few feet to far right. I couldn't see the door that St. Jimmy came in, but I could see that level of the staircase easily. By far the best partial view ticket I've ever bought to this (or any) show. I was in the mezz, F18.

The guy screaming before St. Jimmy was Billie Joe from backstage. According to the cast, they thought it was a fan the first night, but then by the second night realized it was him. lol.

The Guy Screaming was Billie .He did it every show right before he went on . He was kind of interacting with what John was saying during that part of the show . Every show was something different. It got the crowd riled up good once most of them figured out it was Billie yelling .. Brilliant !! His last performance was amazing !! Mabey he will rejoin them at some point after the GD tour is done ? The women did keep the guitar!! She handed him flowers and he smiled and handed her that Gibson guitar ..Thought she was gonna pass out . Good times .

"I've see Tony and Andrew before. Billie brought a whole different perspective of St. Jimmy. Unlike Tony and Andrew, Billie was about the same height of John Gallagher, Jr. and so, he acted more of the "evil" side of Johnny instead of just a separate entity that Tony (and to a point, Andrew)."

I felt the same way. I saw a bit of twist in the role of St. Jimmy in that he was more the alter ego than just a bad influence.

I saw AI back in the spring, but went again yesterday upon the demands of my teenage son. I'm not a rabid fan of Green Day or BJA, but I have to admit, even without the "name", he brought huge star power to this performance. His performance was excellent.

Oh and, the two 40-something year old women sitting in front of me were clearly an embarrassment to their teenage children. During an atypical quiet moment between St. Jimmy and Johnny, one of the women yelled out "I LOVE YOU... A LOT!" She was promptly shooshed by adjacent audience members and her kids slunk down into their seats. The other decided to stand on her seat during the encore and was admonished by the teen sitting next to me.

Well, Tony was the one part of the show that really irked me... great voice, but it literally gave me a headache with all the screaming. Billie Joe seemed like he was a lot more bearable.

Saw the show in April and thought Tony Vincent's voice reminded me of bully Roger Klotz from the Nickelodeon cartoon "Doug." Very high pitched and whiny.

I loved Tony as St. Jimmy, but liked Billie even more.

I saw the show for the first time on Friday night and then saw it again last night... because I just had to see it again before Billie Joe left. The first night, we had student rush seats in row A of the balcony just off the right center aisle, which were supposedly "limited view," but were actually perfect because all they required was leaning forward a bit. They afforded a perfect view of the entire stage and all the aerial work, really showcasing the excellent choreography and stunning stage pictures. Last night, our student rush seats were partial view at the far end of row L in the orchestra. It was great to see the performances so close up the second time, but we missed some of the aerial stuff and most of the action on the platform.

Still, I've never experienced anything quite like the rush of energy that was coursing through the St. James on those two nights. I wasn't planning on seeing it again yesterday, but the rush of Friday night's performance was so exhilarating that I had to return. The excitement in the theater was so palpable. What a unique experience it was to see a legitimate, world-famous rock star still in the prime of his popularity performing in the show that he created in such an intimate venue. Billie Joe received a standing ovation from the entire audience after "St. Jimmy" that lasted for at least a minute or more. I wish I could properly convey what the experience was really like inside the St. James this week, but it's difficult to find words that do it justice. I'll suffice to say that it easily moves into my top ten theatrical experiences of all-time.

As for the show itself, I think that it is a truly brilliant, if imperfect, work in its ambition and audacity. I'm glad Isherwood really seemed to get the piece because most other critics seemed to misunderstand it. First of all, I think that it is the fulfillment of what Rent set out to do, which was to be the first "rock opera". Where Rent's music ended up being grounded in an unshakable musical theater style, American Idiot is a true rock opera, finding the theatricality in music that, surprisingly lends itself quite naturally to the stage and the interpretation of an actor. Punk rock comes from such a vulnerable, angry place that it's surprisingly actable and effective in a dramatic context (thanks also in large part to the brilliance of Tom Kitt's arrangements and orchestrations). What Armstrong and Mayer have done is to create a true, modern-day beggar's opera. Some critics have slammed it for being light on story and characterization, but I think they've missed the point. The point is, it's about a lost generation, a broad and vast percentage of the American population who aren't particularly bright, talented, or distinguishable; regular folks marginalized and left voiceless by the rise of technology and corporate greed; and it tells this story using the real music that defined this generation. American Idiot is ahead of its time and I think in the future, it's grand ambition will put it alongside the great works that truly represent what it was like to be alive at a specific time and place in history. This is what the future of the art form looks like people. Bravo, to all involved.

Thanks for that Actr - that was very well articulated. I think the show has some fundamental flaws, but its goals are staggeringly ambitious and it's an entirely new form of theatrical presentation. For that alone it deserves commendation, and I think it's been remarkably successful in creating an "experience" that captures the zeitgeist of a lost, aimless generation.

Again, really well said.

Actr - you've managed to put into words what I've never been able to. THAT is why I love this show so much and find it to be so brilliant. Thanks for reaching into my brain and articulating what I couldn't. Its officiall--Billie Joe in American Idiot

I also went back for Sunday night's performance. I hadn't intended to, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I just needed to be there. I'm so glad I was. I was in row K, partial view (which is great, only miss a few things on the far left). The energy was indescribable. He'd added things to his performance even from Wednesday night, and was 100% committed. He's a phenomenal performer, and again I just feel so blessed to have been able to see it.
