When Tom Kirdahy shared about the film now being on Disney+ and Hulu on his Instagram stories, I replied with "I rewatched it earlier today. Great job," which he gave a heart reaction to.

I respect what they were trying to do, but it all fell flat to me. Insert a cheap looking J Lo music video into the film every twenty minutes. God bless her, but she’s out of her element. She has no gravitas to play the duality of the character or bring any sense of dread or malevolence. I thought she and Diego Luna were pretty dreadful. Miscast. Tonatiuh was a revelation. Couldn’t save the movie though.
I loved the darkness and melancholy of the original musical. They completely stripped the film of that, which I understand was a choice. Also took out some great music. I get why this movie was completely overlooked by awards. It was a Lifetime movie musical. I know Condon can do darkness well. Gods and Monsters was brilliant.
Missed opportunity on every level. I wonder if they would have gotten more money if a global superstar like Shakira was attached.

Agree with every single word you said, it was disappointing and not the musical I wanted it to be. Why do movie musicals almost always suck? It really is the exception to the norm that they are worth watching compared not just in comparison to the stage counterparts, but at all.

The film will officially be given a physical media release thanks to Kino Lorber. It'll be available on 4K/Blu-Ray, and DVD on June 30th.

Thank you for this update. I like owning physical media, and I'll likely get this.

I said the EXACT same thing. Physical media is almost too important to me

Pre-ordered the 4K/Blu-ray. I'm curious what the deleted scene will be (the listing says it includes one, as well as the trailers), and I look forward to hearing Condon's commentary.

Hopefully, it's 'The Day After That.'

Per Bill Condon, “The Day After That”, "Dressing Them Up," and "Over the Wall" were eliminated from the script when he started writing the screenplay therefore were not part of the production at any time and were never filmed. That’s why no recorded deleted/cut songs exist.

Actually, Condon mentioned that he actually did shoot 'The Day After That.' It was recontextualized with Molina taking something Valentin said and imagining it.

My Blu-Ray copy arrived earlier today. Just dived into the bonus features. The deleted scene is actually the bonus track from the soundtrack. It’s set at a nightclub Molina attends with some friends after he’s put on parole. As for the commentary track, Bill Condon offers such a well detailed insight into making the movie. From the project’s origins to his adaptation choices to the deeper meanings behind certain scenes.

I'll be picking up a copy, too. I've watched it streaming, but I like to own media. This film wasn't as strong an adaptation as Cabaret and Chicago, but I like it quite a lot.

Thanks for diving in to the bonus features. My copy comes in later this week. I am excited. Getting a 4K Blu-ray player for this and a couple of other combo packs I've collected over the years. Cannot wait to see the deleted scene and hear the commentary.
