Heading needs to be fixed, this a new musical not an adaptation of the Scorsese film. The musical is inspired by the film’s title song and will feature songs used in the film, but different characters and story. It has zero of the film’s characters, etc.

I love that artwork!! So stylish and classic.

According to the casting call, the lead characters' names are Jimmy Doyle and Francine Evans, same as in the movie.

It also kind of sounds like they're expanding the scope a bit, kinda like a big-band Rent.

LOL @ the press release:
"The great John Kander said to us recently, when referring to his time in New York City in the years following the end of World War II, "the possibility of a future was always there." Perhaps the same could be said of living and working in New York City today. Once again, the city is bursting with energy, new hope, and the sense that anything is possible "
Uh-huh: Still in the middle of a pandemic, plus there's an increase in homelessness and violence, not to mention inflation. What bubble do these people live in.
Oh, yes: the Broadway theater bubble.

Making things up again as usual. The article clearly states the show is inspired by the film.

And let’s stop pretending this film is a beloved classic. It’s by no means bad, but it ain’t really an important page in American cinema. I don’t think many will care that it’s a different story.

Bizarre take, considering the critical consensus.

The film and the musical both take place right after WW2, with the same names for the leads. This ain’t rocket science, clearly the film is a launching pad for whatever this musical will be.

How is it a bizarre take? The critical consensus was mixed, at best, and it's not a film most people have even seen.

Most people know this film.

I said this in the other thread, but the film has never been available to stream and can only be found on DVD, so for a very long time now, the only way for people to find it is to purchase a physical media copy of it and (it hurts my collector heart to say this) but people just don't really do that anymore. So yes, there was a time it was a moderately well received film that a lot of people knew but hose numbers are VERY dwindled now. Even people who might want to brush up on the source material before seeing the new musical will have to find and purchase the DVD online to do so (which the vast majority won't), which means even if people had seen it a very long time ago, it'll be like even a lot of them walking in blind.

“Bizarre take, considering the critical consensus.”
You mean the…mixed critical reception? Like I said earlier, I like the film. But saying “most people know the film” is quite delusional. The song, maybe? But most know it as a Frank Sinantra song, and not a Liza song from the film.

Wrong. I am not delusional. Why so rude? Your bullying is on display.

My question is: will people flock to see because they love the song “New York, New York”? Frank Sinatra version. Target audience? 🤔

It was mixed upon original release, but it was re-evaluated in a much more positive light after the movie was restored. It's bizarre to have such a dismissive take on it now.

Older white people (Mr Saturday Night crowd) with a splash of younger people due to Lin's involvement. But not enough to make it cool or anything. Most people have never heard of this movie who are under 50.

I am aware. Older whites with disposable income are the majority of Broadway-goers. It doesn't mean it will be cool or anticipated by younger people (Mr. Saturday Night) in some kind of huge way. If Lin was in it on the other hand.....

That it is not based directly on the film is a good thing IMO. DeNiro’s character was an outright manipulative bully and Minnelli’s was a cringey, clingy, whining mess of a woman.
They both irritated me.
