Jon M. Chu will direct a movie-musical adaptation of JOSEPH...DREAMCOAT for Amazon — Page 2

I remember enjoying a tv miniseries with Ben Kingsley and Paul Mercurio. Obviously that wasn’t the musical but I think the story itself is plenty cinematic. And it doesn’t necessarily need to be played high camp. The show has at least one moment of levity in Close Every Door. It could end up looking more like the Jesus Christ Superstar film which could be hit or miss.

I don't know if anyone can make this show not cheesy. But hey, it's not my money.

I'm sure it'll be fine, but I wish he'd tackle Miss Saigon

^ I wish he’d tackle the King & I that Paramount has been trying to get off the ground for a while.

I think Ang Lee could do something beautiful with KING AND I or SOUTH PACIFIC.
Danny Boyle was the last person attached to MISS SAIGON, but I don't know what the status of that is. Feels like it needs someone who can deliver action scenes, which I'm not sure is in Chu's wheelhouse. In an ideal world, the director & screenwriter would be Vietnamese (and at least one of them a Vietnamese woman, and one with experience structuring a musical...no small feat).

^ I would be open to a South Pacific remake too.

The headline feels like a prompt setup for a Broadway themed “Match Game.”
“John M. Chu is directing a movie version of Joseph, but this time…”

I too have been thinking Jon M. Chu doing Miss Saigon wouldn't be such a bad idea. He actually has helmed action movies before (back when he was pretty much working as a director for hire) such as G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Now You See Me 2. As for Ang Lee, it feels like he's lately been more interested in finding the next big technical challenge as opposed to finding a story he feels passionate about.

Jon M. Chu has given an update on this project. He told Deadline Hollywood "We’ll see how we go. I wait until we get the script right, and I’ll wait until it feels like an urgent need – that the world needs it ‘right now.’" He also said that it's been "great" working with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

^ Ok I have my fingers crossed on this!

In a recent interview with The Irish News, Tim Rice confirmed that he and Andrew Lloyd Webber are writing new songs for the film.

I'm always fascinated that they decidedly haven't worked together on any new shows/projects for allege "reasons" but they'll hammer out some new songs for their old work.

Yes, because what Joseph needed was new songs.

Dana Fox (co-writer of Wicked) is writing the screenplay for Joseph.

The show is barely 90 minutes as it is. How are they going to stretch it out into two 2.5 hour movies without more songs?

And who knows...maybe they will introduce a little more story so that it feels like a full movie vs. an incredibly padded show.

Seeing how Chu and company have (so far) managed to justify adapting one two and a half hour stage musical into a pair of two-hour plus films, we should probably give him the benefit of the doubt.

^ I knew since In The Heights that he could pull off Part 1 of Wicked somewhat.

Chu understands the necessity of extremely good singers for the lead roles who understand the art form of telling a story through song. A note is an actor too. So I think it's unlikely that this will happen.

Does he? Tell that to Michelle Yeoh, Marissa Bode, and Melissa Barrera.

Honestly, a lightweight, comedic musical like Joseph seems like a good fit for him, though I wish he'd chosen a better show. Maybe he's tired of Stephen Schwartz, but Pippin has a similar tone and better music, as does Godspell (until the end, of course).

To be fair, Madame Morrible in Wicked doesn't have a lot to sing. So it's not like the role needs a strong vocalist. I actually quite liked Bode and Barrera's work in their respective films.

I mean, Joseph only has like... 2 roles that actually need to singers.
Also, I dont think anyone actually cares Joseph enough where this beats the Movie Musical odds. Especially if it's his next movie coming off Wicked with how much expansion Joseph would actually need compared to Wicked.
