Heard from a few people that NBC's musical for October 2022 is THE ADDAMS FAMILY, with Katy Perry as Morticia. Any other word??
Anything’s a better idea than Hair Live!
I’d love to have Harvey adapt the book. And the parts are so juicy, I’m sure they could get a star studded cast!

I hear she was going to star in Waitress!
This could be interesting... very interesting.
[double post]
It would be interesting to see if it could work, but I think typically American Idol auditions start in late summer/early fall. Also, would ABC let her go to NBC for the fall?

Katy Perry would be fine, but I’d love to see Antonio Banderas as Gomez.

IF it's Katy Perry, then Ricky Martin would be a lot more "age appropriate".

Age appropriate? If they were casting this as a major motion picture, Perry would be deemed too old to be matched with Banderas. Ricky Martin would be great. I just picture Gomez as being smaller in stature.
The Addams estate has been pretty consistent post Nathan Lane: all major media depictions of Gomez are dark-skinned, stubby and Spanish. Those are probably the lines we should be looking along for potential Gomez candidates.

Is that in the licensing notes for the musical, or did you read that somewhere else? I can understand them insisting the role be played by an actor of Hispanic heritage, but dictating skin tone and weight seems a little much.

This will sit nicely on the shelf next to jlo in bye bye 🐦 and alec Baldwin in hair.
Too soon?
Let's also acknowledge this anniversary when rent live should have been broadcast. They were in such a rush for nothing. I hope they're happy
I was listening to the OBC recording a few days ago thinking this show would be great fun as a live television musical. Overall I liked the Broadway version better though and not the revised version they currently license. I imagine a television adaptation would undergo even more revisions.
It’s not in the notes. It’s in the entire Addams franchise; they used to use a John Astin/Raul Julia caricature to depict Gomez, but they’ve pivoted towards all depictions, live or animated, being based on Charles Addams’s original swarthier version of the character. (Wednesday has also reverted to her original cutesy big-headed design instead of one inspired by the proportions of a real girl.)
I imagine a major TV version would have some oversight from the Addams estate and they’d pick a “traditional” Gomez to fit the return to branding based on those original sketches.
Honestly this is a pretty great idea.

It’s odd that they’d want to revert to the original depiction, because Charles Addams worked closely with John Astin to develop his character for the 60s series. He approved of Astin’s hiring and the hyper romantic choices he made in the role. Astin even named the character. I find Gomez much more effective when he is charming and sexy rather than stubby and clownish.
The original Chicago opening number, “Clandango”, is the better of the two openings and better encapsulates the tone, in my opinion. Sure “When You’re An Addams” is more kooky and ooky, but the original opening was creepy, spooky, and mysterious.
IF this ends up being true, Katy could be a great choice. She can certainly look the part easily and she's proven that when in good voice, she can sound pretty darn great (singing "Firework" at Biden's inauguration being a good example of some soaring vocals.)

For those who missed it, Nathan Lane at the memorial service to Elaine Stritch, recalled Stritch visiting him backstage after seeing the show and delivering one of her classic zingers. "Whatever they're paying you, it's not enough!"

I completely disagree about “Clandango” I think they were right to replace it.
I'll never forget that the Chicago tryout climaxed with Terrence Mann being dragged off stage by a giant squid tentacle. Then returning to sing a song ("In the Arms" about the joys of tentacle molestation. It was a real "who is this for?" moment.
Though it gave Nathan Lane a great moment when he told the grieving squid "It wouldn't last. He's a man. You're a giant squid. You'd never get past the hotel clerk."

"When You're An Addams" is fun... if anything maybe fit "Clandango" as a finale with the official ceremony for Wednesday. Either way, I guess my thought is that I wish the song hadn't been cut, even if "Addams" was the number that ended up being the opening. haha.
