Greetings... I'm going to have a day and a half to see two shows. I've checked availability and right now the three I'm most interested have seats. One of them is Allegiance (plenty of seats). I know it's had mixed reviews and mixed responses here but part of me feels like the history lesson itself, especially today, is a good reason to see it. Then there's King Charles III and The Humans, which I know is moving to Broadway in January. Those are the three I'm focused on right now -- I've seen most of what I wanted to see this season, although I've definitely missed more shows this year than normal. So... which of those three, or should I choose something else entirely. Thanks!
I haven't seen ANY of them, but it's definitely between King Charles III and The Humans. The latter would be my choice, but I've heard amazing things about King Charles III also. So yeah, I'd say The Humans.
I know I'm in the minority but the only one I've seen of those three is The Humans and I did not find it remarkable. I didn't hate it certainly but it had little to no impact on me. I would vote for Allegiance because of the talent involved. Have you seen A View From the Bridge? If you're looking for a play, I've only heard good things from people I've spoken to.
LOVED King Charles, have heard great things about The Humans...but Allegiance? I could not, in good conscience recommend that to anyone. I wanted to like it, love it even due to the subject matter, but it was pretty terrible.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I haven't seen King Charles III yet, but it's closing at the end of January, so I think this is your chance if you want to see it (unless there's been a touring announcement that I completely missed). Loved The Humans and highly recommend it, and ticket prices will probably be cheaper than they will be on Broadway. If you pick it, though, get tickets as soon as possible because it's almost sold out. Allegiance is worth seeing for the cast and the story, but I thought the book was very predictable and I didn't find the score memorable. I also second VintageSnarker's recommendation of A View From The Bridge. That was great as well! I hope I was helpful, and I hope you enjoy your trip no matter what you wind up seeing.
A View from the Bridge and King Charles III were both great. Hard to go wrong with either. The closer you can sit for A View, the better. Onstage may be best if you can get them.
I think you all have sold me on "A View from the Bridge." And balcony tickets are quite affordable. Have any of you sat in the Lyceum balcony? I often buy "better" tickets but when the difference between a rear mezzanine seat and one in the balcony, for instance, is $64, well, I'm going to go with the balcony. And I don't know about other theatergoers, but once I'm into a show I really don't even think about where I'm sitting. I'm fully engaged wherever my seat is.
Balcony is very high up and not a favorite of mine. It is not that comfortable and that is the reason the tickets are cheap.King Charles III had a great cast and remains a favorite of mine too.

I'd honestly try to get much closer if I were you. The theatre is a barn, which is unfortunate for such an intimate play. I honestly felt like I was seeing the show from miles away, and sadly, I didn't enjoy it too much (the show itself was amazing, had I not been in the balcony I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more). I'd say try to get in the orchestra for this one.
I would agree with orchestra for this show. I don't know your specific dates and financial constraints, but the discounts have been out there for pretty decent seats.
Yeah, I would say A View From The Bridge is a great pick. Also, if you want to see some comedy, Roundabout's Noises Off will be playing and that's an amazing farce.
Offering one dis-recommendation to King Charles III (though it seems to have slipped lower on your wish list). We were bored to tears and debated leaving at intermission. Act II was marginally better. We can enjoy a juicy Shakespearean play with the best of them, but the faux-iambic verse throughout absolutely grated on us from start to finish. Sure, there is some superb acting from secondary characters, but they couldn't save this dreary play for us.
I've seen Charles, View from the Bridge, and Humans, and they're all very good, but I fell hardest for The Humans. If you do see View, though, they have a $20 rush and that will get you much closer seats than the balcony!
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
