Thank you so much for posting, Anthony (luv ya, man). As posted before by me (and Anthony has backed this up, so yay for me ) Mimi is the only one who's age is mentioned so the OBC (with the exception of Daphne) could play the roles. And I for one would LOVE to see them on screen since I was not able to see them on stage. And for those griping because they have wanted a new RENT cd to listen to with new people, I say "boo hoo." I LOVE the RENT cd that I own and cherish it with all of my heart. If some of the OBC returns for the movie and a soundtrack is released (please, God) their voice will be more matured and the instrumentals will be even better than they are in the OBC recording. I love you all, and you all know that but I am getting sick of everyone always trying to find an excuse to wine and complain. Like I said before, when the movie comes out and you still don't like it....then complain. Until then, just let it be.
Still love ya, though.

I'm mostly looking forward to the release of a new RENT soundtrack that way the newbies will finally refer to a musical soundtrack that I won't have to go, "IT'S CALLED A CAST RECORDING, ASS!"

Like you did to me when I first joined? lol. But, you have shown me the error of my ways and I thank you for it. Now, I am one of your "IT'S CALLED A CAST RECORDING, ASS!" groupies. HOORAH!!

Did I really get on your ass about it? I probably did. HUZZAH!
You're welcome, Spider. The pleasure has been reciprocated with your photos of Miss CZJ, although I don't appreciate your current avatar of her without her makeup.

Generally, movie recordings sound different from their stage counterparts. Generally, because some parts of a broadway score won't transfer to the screen completely so they have to modify it. With RENT, even though it is set in the early 90's, they will more than likely (and I hope so) add more of a "today's" rock feel to it. The general movie audience is not the same as a theatre audience. With theatre, the audience understands that the music is set in a certain time frame and accepts it. With the general movie going audience, if the music sounds even the slightest outdated, they will lose interest. Does that make sense?

This is just speculation of course. I don't "know" if they are updating, I am just saying what I think. If they do change a few things, I don't think Anthony and others will let them ruin it. It is their baby. They are the ones that created these characters. It will probably just be minor things if any.

I have to say that whether or not they look too old or whatever (I don't know, I'm horrible with how old I think people are, never ask me to guess) it makes me feel better to know that they're involved with the movie. They won't let something bad happen to it. As Spider said, it's their baby.
Why do we play with fire?
Why do we run our fingers through the flame?
Why do we leave our hands on the stove, although we know we're in for some pain?

Well, Thank you so much for posting Anthony. I feel very honored that you cared enough to post that here to 'calm our fears'.
On the topic of age. I was watching The View today, and they had on the daughters from "10 Rules for Dating my Teen Age Daughter." I found out that one of the daughters is 26 and is playing a 16 year old! Wow! So after seeing that, I have less doubts!
I want to write music. I want to sit down right now at my piano and write a song that people will listen to and remember and do the same thing every morning...for the rest of my life. - Jonathan Larson. Tick, Tick...BOOM!
First of all, thanks for responding so warmly to my posting. I really hoped it would help...
Secondly, as to the recording, I don't know yet if there are plans to release a new album, but I would love for that to happen. I think all of our voices have matured and improved, and Tim Weil is still the musical director (another proof that Chris wants to maintain a continuity to the show) so nothing will be bastardized. But I think the sound would be even edgier in places, in a good way. This might be a surprise to some of you, but we in the cast aren't thrilled with the way the OBCR came out -- we feel the mix is a bit soft relative to what the sound we created onstage was like. I would personally love the guitars in the movie to be crunchier, for the drums to have more thunder, and for there generally to be less of a sheen to the whole thing.
We shall see...
Again, thanks for your support. And to the skeptics, I say: feel free to remain skeptical. Just try, if you can, to also remain open-minded...
Glad to hear that Tim is on board. I'd love to hear more of a rockish sound to the show.
Personally, I am open minded, but skeptical. I am VERY much of the thought that a bad film of Rent would be a distaster and it MUST be done properly... tehs how has lots of nice memories for me from it's early days, but over the last few years, that has been lost. I want a film that captures what the show once was.

Label me a dork, but I freaked out when I saw you posting again. Thanks so much, though.
I would like to hear the things you described- a lot of the instrumentals seemed calmed down too much on the OBCR. (and there's this one sour note in Without You...)
I don't know if you're allowed to answer or even if you will, but have all five accepted?
I'm a closet optimist, personally. And I will give it a chance, but I'll be afraid when I walk into the theater.

I'm also one of the cautiously optimistic skeptics, but honestly Anthony, I'm glad that people are onboard who will treat this movie like their baby. How much creative control do you anticipate that the cast will have on the final product? Has Chris Columbus seemed open to your input?

Well, thats wonderful that you will have the oppurtunity to correct the wrongs you feel were there on the OBCR.
If I may ask a question, and if you are allowed to give us this information. Do you know the full cast? In your first post you mentioned Jesse and Adam. Is anyone else confirmed for the movie? I don't want to believe rumors floating around!
Thanks again. Sorry if you seem bombarded with questions!

I'd love to see a new recording...Are the songs that were added back in from NYTW still there? I would love to see "Open Road" in the movie...it's such a gorgeous song.

I have to agree with your last comment. I too understand that people/fans are sceptical but we need to keep an open mind about this. We know NOTHING about this movie, so it makes me very sad to see how negative some people are about this all. See it, then judge.
I understand that some fans are sad to maybe 'lose' their favorite Broadway performers to the big screen but we can't be that selfish, guys. I can imagine it's like a dream come true for the OBC to be part of this. And I for one would grab this opportunity.
All the best to them and I hope this works out for you the way you would like it to.

'He really wasn't good as Fieyro. Is it just me or does he sort of come across as a pimp? Just...the hand motions I've seen him do and the attitude..not that Taye is a pimp.' - SallyBrown on Taye Diggs as Fiyero
Atleast the people who are being "selfish" are honest about it, and are not trying to cover up their motives with stupid reasons!
I want to write music. I want to sit down right now at my piano and write a song that people will listen to and remember and do the same thing every morning...for the rest of my life. - Jonathan Larson. Tick, Tick...BOOM!
I've probably made some of said selfish comments... just meaning that if... if a few weeks from now, for example, were to be the last time I ever saw a certain someone on stage, I'd be really sad (unlikely, I'm sure... but for example) - but you guys know that no matter what, I support whatever they choose to do; no matter what (hey, even Fiyero, Tiff) I'd be happy for them. So, if this is truly something they want to do, as it seems (thanks again, Anthony!) then go get 'em, guys!
And yes. I guess I'm skeptical about the way the movie will turn out, but I'm going to be open to it. Much as I complain, there is no way I'd miss it.
It remains to be seen how open Chris will be to our input, but so far every indication I have points to his being very open indeed -- he asked me lots of questions in our meeting, and as I said, he's hired Tim Weil to md, it looks likely that he will hire Marlies to choreograph, and he's had extensive conversations with the Larson family. And unless he's changed tremendously since we did Adventures in Babysitting together, my experience of working with him tells me he is one of the most collaborative directors I've ever known. Adventures in Babysitting is filled with bits of business and lines of dialogue that the cast members came up with.
As for old songs being in the show, at this point, the only songs in the script are those that are in the current production. And some of those songs are cut or turned into dialogue. But again, I feel these changes are important in a cinematic context.
And I agree vehemently with this statement: "I am VERY much of the thought that a bad film of Rent would be a distaster and it MUST be done properly..." Rest assured we will do our best to do it properly.
