Gwen did replace Fredi#775
Posted: 11/4/04 at 10:04pmI was there when Fredi left and I was there when Gwen took over for her. She was the first replacement for Fredi. I know I have bootlegs of both shows.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 10:10pmEmcee did we read the same screenplay, the one where Roger sings Rent at CBGB's without Marc for the most part and Maureen sings La Vie Boeheme, if we both read the original Chobsky first draft I have to disagree with you -- it sucked. The dialogue was bloody awful, but thank god i sent anthony a message and he wrote back that the first draft is basically trashed, the songs will be sung in context now (not Roger singing one song glory in a pawn shop he's working at - remember he can't or won't leave the apartment by that point in the play) and that the script they are working with is very true to Larson's Libretto and he said the extra stuff added is to clarify plot points and to improve charactization. He said the script is great and sounded like all rent fans will be happy with it.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 10:14pmKate Monster, I agree Gwen and Kristen we're way beyond phenomenal. I honestly would rather see Kristen in the movie over Idina (oh oh did i just say something that people will be mad at) Yes Kristen was a far better Maureen than Idina, Idina left too early and Kristen worked with the director alot to make Over the Moon and Take Me or Leave Me better and better.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 10:26pmi heard from a bird that the rehearsal period is gonna be 6 weeks then the recording is gonna be 4 weeks.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 10:31pmB-Way Buff I think I heard the same, maybe from the same person.
Rehearsal and Recording#783
Posted: 11/4/04 at 10:36pmWhen are rehearsals and recording supposed to start?
Rehearsal and Recording#784
Posted: 11/4/04 at 10:38pmI'm glad to hear there's going to be such a lengthy rehearsal period. Really unusual for movies these days, but should be very helpful in integrating the new people with the original cast members. It's also a process theater people are used to, of course. I wish I could be a fly on the wall during those rehearsals!

Posted: 11/4/04 at 11:34pmajay, I don't think it was perfect... actually, my biggest problem was probably that some of the dialogue was pretty poorly written. But I did really like a lot of the new stuff that they're able to show in a movie that you can't see on stage... like, I really liked what he did with Another Day and Without You. And remember, a lot has changed since that draft.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 11:54pmBroadwaygirl, I think Anthony Rapp said earlier on that rehearsals start at the end of this month.
Rehearsal and Recording#787
Posted: 11/4/04 at 11:59pmSomething like November-January rehearsals/recording (breaks for holidays) and 13 weeks of shooting early next year.... I think that's what Anthony said. Correct me if I'm wrong...
Chobsky's script answer to Emcee#788
Posted: 11/5/04 at 1:10amEmcee, Anthony wrote to me and said that now all the songs are in context with the exception of "Out Tonight" it's still in the Cat Skratch Club, but thats it (thank God). He also said the draft they are using stays very true to the J. Larson libretto and that the extras are to fill some plot points and to help understand the characters better. I was so relieved when he wrote me cos now I believe this Movie can be amazing, I mean Chobsky had Roger sing Rent in CBGB's before April dies as a song his band plays without Marc taking part (barely) and Maureen sings La Vie Boeheme (wrong wrong wrong) But now that Over the Moon and I should tell you are back in the script I think that takes care of that, I agree "Without You" was interesting filmically but did not make sense narratively, "Another Day" was also filmically very interesting. But Roger singing Glory in a pawn shop he works at, and then cutting Light My Candle was just ridiculous, Roger is supposed to be reclusive at this point not wanting to leave the apartment. Getting a job at a pawn shop ugg! And I also hated the pre story where the narrative starts before the play, I'm not saying it can't be done, it was just done simply badly, I spent four years in Alphabet City in the early 90's and I'm sorry I've seen such stupid stereotypes in the Chobsky script as "Avenue A Kids" I laughed out loud. Posted: 11/5/04 at 1:12amOkay, fair enough. So are they keeping the things that you don't see on stage... Roger in rehab, Mimi being abused, Roger finding April, etc? It's different, but I liked it.
Chobsky's script answer to Emcee#790
Posted: 11/5/04 at 1:21amEmcee, Id have to ask Anthony that one, I'm not sure, yes they could show Roger finding April in the bathtub and going to rehab if they left it with that, no surprise party when he comes home, also a badly written scene, Roger finding April and him in rehab does make sense for a movie version of this film.
Chobsky's script answer to Emcee#791
Posted: 11/5/04 at 1:29amYeah, I'm re-reading this now and I'm not liking the surprise party part. I'd still be interested to see Another Day and Without You remain the way they were originally written; I think they have definite potential.

I really enjoyed Chbosky's first draft. It was almost like a combination of the musical and the best fanfiction I have ever read. To me, I would more like to see the vibe and the engergy of the show and the characters on film, and not necessarily the liberetto word for word. I was a bit surprised that What You Own wasnt in there except that little bit at the very end.
Emcee, Another Day and Without You were my favorite songs the way it was written in.
What I liked about the script was the way it worked the songs into the show. Since musical movies have only started making a come back, I don't know how audiences will respond to just having people burst out in song. And in Chicago, except for a few numbers, all the songs were fantasy.
Who knows maybe Phantom will serve as a lead in to this.

All we know is that Wilson Jermaine Heredia has been offered the role. No one knows if he's taken it.
When will this all become public knowledge, anyway?
Rent Casting#798
Posted: 11/5/04 at 12:15pmI'm guessing they won't make an announcement until all the major roles are cast and everyone is signed. But that seems fairly close to happening now.
Rent Casting#799
Posted: 11/5/04 at 12:15pmHm. I'm kind of still hoping for Jai. That would give them a big name AND some serious talent. We'll see, I guess....
