I just saw Wedding Singer today - loved all of the 80s references (I want to buy myself a Van Halen shirt now). overall, great show.
If you (or anyone) really wants to buy the Van Halen shirt used in the show, they're available at the online Van Halen store. Just thought you might want to know.
I'm pretty sure I walked RIGHT by Dancingthrulife on the way back to the subway. I almost said hey but didn't. If you saw the girl carrying a crapload of bags with two people walking down Broadway with a GIGANTIC Sutton Foster hanging marquee from Little Women... that was me, iLuvtheatertrash, and a friend of ours (we're moving into an apartment sometime soon, and that sign is totally getting bolted to our ceiling).

Hi guys. I saw "W.S." back in May and had a blast. Fun, fun fun! Marvelous cast, 2 romantic leads I actually believed for a change and many memories of my high school years.
I am taking the boyfriend and mom to see it Nov. 12. Now, I have not had time to read all 98 pages of this thread, so please forgive me if I ask stuff that has already been covered:
1) why did Matthew (who I thought was a riot as Sammy!) leave? did they buy out his contract and move in the American Idol guy to boost tickets sales? did Matthew leave of his own accord to pursue another project? was there bad blood surrounding that? is Matt slated to come back, and if so, when?
2) i saw that L. Benanti was out a lot (vocal exhaustion?) and is due back 10/3. do u think she'll be in it thru Nov. 12th when I see it, or do you think this is the beginning of a 'Donna Murphy in Wonderful Town' phase where she barely ever plays now? Is there a decent chance I'll see her do the role again?
3) Since you all seem to know the good dirt, is anyone else slated to be out around the time we see it 11/12? Anyone on vacation on 11/12? Spanger, Lynch, Cahoon should all still be in it at that time, yes? Anyone slated to take vacation, or should they all be in it as it sort of begins the holiday season performances?
4) The ticket sales have picked-up, yes. This American Idol guy and the tourist trade should kepe it running until the end of 2006, yes?
Thanks for this and ANY OTHER DIRT whatsoever that you might know about this truly enjoyable show. I think my beau and mom are gonna love it, that is...if it is still playing on 11/12.
"I am not 'a' Eunice Burns. I am THE Eunice Burns!!!"
1. Matthew took a leave of absense from the show to work on another project, and is supposed to return when Constantine's run is done on November 5th. :)
2. ....I'm so biting my tongue on this one, ahaha.
3. No scheduled absenses that I'm aware of as of right now, but that doesn't mean someone else doesn't know something.
1) Ohhhh u mean we'll get to see Matt? Terrif! What project did he go off to do exactly? Do you know?
2) Why are u biting your tongue on Benanti? U lost me. Hanh? DETAILS!?
4) Also, is the show in serious, serious, DIRE financial trouble that it might close before 11/12? (I assumed that tourist trade was keeping it alive and would continue to do so until January? No? Am I wrong? Are they on the verge of closing by Halloween??
Gimme the dirt on 1, 2 & 4, oh wise, all knowing thespian.
"I am not 'a' Eunice Burns. I am THE Eunice Burns!!!"
I think the reason for the tongue biting is the fact that questions about Laura Benanti's current health don't usually end well. There has been quite a bit of animosity on the boards as of late (you can see a recent example of it in the thread concerning Laura's return) on that topic.
But I will just sum up and say that Laura was out due to some serious health issues. She is coming back, and unless something drastic happens she's not going to be out if she can help it.

My thing regarding Benanti is that before ANY health issues were made known, she was still out constantly. By June, I had friends who had seen the show several times tell me they'd seen Tina a good amount if not most of the times they'd seen the show - and it only opened at the end of April! Laura was out a lot, even since previews.
So, VB2, until she proves that she's going to have a good track record when she comes back? It could be a coin toss as to whether you'll see her or Tina.
Regarding Matthew, no, I don't know what his project was. All I know was that England was included in this! LOL
I'm not going to get into a whole shebang about this, because frankly I don't want to and I know Laura doesn't want me to. But I just have to say one thing before I shut my mouth:
Just because health issues weren't known to the general public, doesn't mean they didn't EXIST.
There. Done. I'm not going to say ANYTHING more about this. Ever. Because I only ever wind up pissing myself off over stupid stuff.

WOWIE. thanks. u're good...u know all the 'dish'. LOL. i guess it's a miracle we saw her that Sat. evening in May, then , eh? why the heck is benanti out so much? did she "phone it in" this much when she was in INTO THE WOODS? does she suffer from Donna Murphy syndrome? is she at odd with the suits? any insight into this, thespian?
is her understudy as equally enjoyable as benanti herself was?
i heard that this american idol kid surged ticket sales back up...u know, america loves those idol kids, apparently.
i know they are selling tkts. for this into Jan., 2007. thespian, is there some new fiscal crisis that makes it look like the tourists aren't supporting this into the new year? is this show's running potential in major trouble?

sry, but can we not start this whole thing about laura again? put it on the other thread but dont currupt this thread with all the laura drama that im sick of. she IS coming back! yay!!
"is her understudy as equally enjoyable as benanti herself was?"
although i havnt seen her, i have only heard good things about tina! so no matter who you see, they will be great!
I'm kind of intrigued by the last sentence in the article: "Although signed to play Sammy in The Wedding Singer for eight weeks, Constantine Maroulis notes, "I plan to stay around a little bit longer."
Con's gotten a pretty decent reaction from people who have seen him in the WS. I know most of you want Matthew back because he is the original Sammy and it's hard to put someone else in the role.
Same with Laura applies I guess.
When I saw WS, I saw Tina as Julia. I had read here before I went, so I thought I wasn't getting first string with Tina, but she is perfect as Julia. I loved her in the role.
When I go again, Laura should be back, and I'll be missing Tina.
So I see your point in missing Matthew. However, as a Constantine fan, I'm looking forward to seeing him again and if he stays on, it'll be good for him and the Wedding Singer. Just my opinion of course.
Jekyll & Hyde back on Broadway! / Rock of Ages - 5 Tony nominations! Awesome!
i think my main thing with wanting to see laura so bad is that she was who i saw when i went before and she was lovely. i loved her in the role. and if i could see the show more often i would love to see tina. ive only heard good things about her so i would love to see her. but since im only going once more that i know of right now, i HAVE to see laura.
Now if my picture was on that sandwich sign ..that would be scary. With Constantine there I'm surprised that my wife hasn't stolen the sign...she loves his eyes.
We went to the show last week because she wanted to Constantine. He was very good. We both enjoyed Constantine (and the whole cast) When is Matthew going to be back? I'd like to see him too. I can't compare until I see both.
I'm watching MTV right now, and there's this new show on..."Little Talent Show." They have a mini-contest of acting, singing, and dancing.
Anyway, Constantine is the singing judge on this episode (Kimberly Locke was on the episode before) and for like 2 seconds they flash the credits the judge has for what they're doing. Constantine's were like "American Idol contestant", something else, and "Currently starring in The Wedding Singer." Why don't these people know who has the lead roles and who doesn't?!

What would you prefer them to say? "Currently featured in the Wedding Singer" "Currently not starring, but he's still in the Wedding Singer" "Live on Stage in the Wedding Singer". . ."Starring" sells tickets. And I believe if there was anyone brought in for any of the six principles, it would be referred to as a "Star Turn."
I just remembered when that original flier for Constantine came out with the misspelling of the theater name it said "Starring in" and people didn't like it. I noticed it this time and remembered that it seemed to be changed before and no one minded.
I guess personally I'd like to see "Currently performing in..." He's performing and still bringing in tickets whether he's starring in it or not. And, I'm glad that he's bringing in sales because I love the show and wish it much success.
I just assumed there was a bit of a difference between lead roles and secondary, but then again I never looked too much into theater terminology so if I'm wrong, that's cool too.

Sammy isn't a lead role, so by all technicalities, Constantine is FEATURED in The Wedding Singer. Not starring. But whatever, I'm not on the publicity crew for the show, what does what I say matter?
As far as I was aware, Matthew was supposed to be returning to the show after Constantine was done. I'm going to be kind of upset if they decide to not let Matthew return to the show because Constantine is selling tickets. :- That's just.. crappy. Not surprising, but crappy.

-------------------
I would also prefer "Currently FEATURED in...." It is not only more accurate, but it isn't as misleading as "currently starring." People who do not follow Broadway shows as closely as we do would not know that Sammy is neither a starring role nor that Constantine is only appearing until Matt returns (after November 5?), and therefore, could be easily misled to believe something that is not actually a fact. Aaahh, Broadway....You gotta love it guys. EVERYBODY is a star! (Below from current news bulletin) ha,ha
Laura Benanti Returns to The Wedding Singer, Oct.
The show also currently stars Stephen Lynch, Felicia Finley, Amy Spanger, Richard Blake, Kevin Cahoon, Rita Gardner, and "American Idol"'s Constantine Maroulis.
SERIOUSLY, I'm easy!...The main cast is doing a great job, including Constantine! (Even as we speak he is probably putting on a WS shirt or doing a shoutout on some radio/tv show.) Soooo...Star on Baby! ha ha
