Interesting, I thought Christine Sherrill was a phenomenal Donna when the tour came through Chicago last spring. I genuinely think she could be a dark horse for awards next spring; that’s if the show even opens itself up to eligibility. I’m mostly concerned how the tour set will look in the Winter Garden. Hopefully they enhance it.

This is good news, I love this musical. But the show definitely needs a star, and I mean a real big star playing Donna...any possible options?

Mamma Mia played for 14 years on broadway without a star as Donna. So, no the show doesn’t “definitely need a star.”
What's Carolee doing? Could we make something work?
Is this just going to be the cheap tour set charging Broadway prices?
Is the original show deck in storage somewhere? Pull it out for this engagement?

The same people who were doing that for the last years of its run. Foreign tourists love this show.

Sorry if this is stupid to ask but is the current West End version the original design? It’s the only version I’ve seen for this show

I expect locals will flock to this as well as tourists. People are hungry for positivity and something upbeat. So while they may have turned their noses up last time, plenty will give in this time around.
I think the current London set is the same design as the original production, just shrunk a bit for its current theatre.

The character is 38-40.

Meryl was like 60 when she did it and that was film. Carolee would be fine on stage today.

Carolee is still on tour in Kimberly.
Okay than how about Glenn Close?
Glenn Close as Donna Sheridan as Norma Desmond
This is the current tour production making an extended pit stop in NYC, simple as that.
Dream cast all you want, tho :)

Anecdotally, just about every friend I have that's a "theater casual" has asked me for the past 3 years whether I thought Mamma Mia would be coming back to NYC anytime soon because they'd want to see it (and this is including a couple who saw it in the West End within the past 5 years!), so there's at least SOME demand. And assuming there are decent rush/lottery tickets, I wouldn't mind seeing it again, especially with all the praise for Christine Sherrill but I do hope the set/audio problems are fixed for Winter Garden.

No the original design doesn't exist anymore. The West End production and the US tour don't have the larger curved taverna walls that were automated, the light up floor or the raising dock.

And this is THEATRE.
In a British musical with Americans singing Swedish songs on a Greek island, age is just a number.
It's a six month engagement (so far). I think this will do just fine at the box office.
Oh I hope this transfers and runs forever. Welcome back Mamma Mia!

Wow! Yes. I didn’t think of her as Donna but I’d be so excited.
Mamma Mia! is my all time favorite show, and I’m so happy I had second thoughts about a trip in April, so now we can do a trip in August!

I had heard this being thrown around recently. The current touring cast will transfer to NY, as the show's the star.
How interesting that Anderson and Ulvaeus will likely have CHESS and MAMMA MIA! on Broadway at the same time.

You're telling me Alisa Melendez will be back on Broadway in a full time leading role? She's absolutely incredible, that is so exciting! I hope this makes her a big star.
