The four Broadway shows performing in the first hour include: Bye Bye Birdie - "Put on a Happy Face" Hair - "Aquarius" Billy Elliot - "Shine" Shrek - "I'm a Believer"
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I'm a Believer? They're showing off a song that's not even (really) in the show? I understand that people already know that song, but seriously, come on. Freak Flag would've been a great choice.
I can't believe that Shrek is doing "I'm a Believer". My guess is that they are hoping tourists will recognize the song and want to see the show. Updated On: 11/2/09 at 08:42 PM
I really wish Birdie would do The Telephone Hour or A Lot of Livin' to Do...or really anything that didn't involve Stamos or Gershon. Though I guess they want his star power to sell the show or whatever, but you'd think they'd want to show off the better numbers in the show rather than Put On A Happy Face which was kind of a train wreck when I saw it.
Meh. The only performance I might be kinda sorta interested in is Hair. Shrek performing I'm A Believer is ridiculous. At least do a song that's actually IN the show and not tacked onto the curtain call as a desperate gimmick to entice tourists.
"You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!" - Betty Parris to Abigail Williams in Arthur Miller's The Crucible
Hair has done Aquarius on TV a million times, Shrek is closing and performing a number not even in the show, Put On a Happy Face falls completely flat in Birdie, and Shine is a cheap ripoff of Razzle Dazzle, which is from a much better show.
I really think that Bye Bye Birdie is doing "Put on a Happy Face" because a lot of people know John Stamos from Full House. Plus, I think the song is a little more recognizable to more people. I actually know someone who is a fan of the current revival, yet they never saw it and probably won't, but they like John Stamos.

Before we start discussing the uniqueness of Mr. Stamos and Miss Gershon we should keep in mind that once, years ago, THOU SHALT NOT performed in the parade... that's something you don't forget!
I missed a word in that last sentence about my friend. Sorry. I meant that she's a fan of it on Facebook, but I have a feeling it's only because of John Stamos. She also has Rock of Ages listed, and she's never seen that either, and Contantine Maroulis is in that.

Oh Lord, I remember raising an eyebrow or two when they said Thou Shalt Not would be performing. And I was only about 13 at the time.
