I'm thinking within a year & a half.
And I thought I was hardcore... I love the show, but I'm definitely in the camp that says FOR AN UNDERSTUDY??? Seriously?
Nobody answered one of the above questions... was this ridiculous all tickets being gone by 5 AM thing simply because the understudy was going on? Or is it now like this everyday? I haven't rushed in a while.
Today was the first time I had rushed it since before the Tonys so I can't say for certainty but I think it was more Meghann going on than anything.
Holy ****, that's insanity. For an understudy making her Broadway debut!? (I mean, I'm not knocking her, that's excellent, but... waiting overnight!?) I'm so glad my friend & I didn't try to see the show today like we had almost planned! I know nothing about the understudies/casting announcements for this show, is there any kind of thing going on next Thursday July 2nd that would cause this kind of craziness again? I saw the show at 2nd Stage & my friend has never seen it so we don't care about seeing a particular person (other than Alice.)
I'm so frustrated with this rush. It's unfair to those who haven't seen the show, or those who don't live in the city. We really need a lotto.
^^Or perhaps a rush closer to show time. I actually kinda like the rushes that happen at 6, as opposed to 10 am. My lotto luck kinda sucks, sadly.
And yes, I once spent a night outside on the pavement for rush tickets, back a few years for Rent (yes, I said it and admit it). But I had a ton of fun, met great people and it was a weekend and good weather. Can't so much do things like that anymore.

I think that would be even worse for this show. Then people would just wait all day rather than overnight. And anyone who works during the day would be out of luck. Usually I am all for rush rather than lotto, but in this case I think a lottery would be a better decision.
^^Or they could do what 42nd Street did back when I rushed and make copies of ID and allow each person to only rush once per calendar month.
A hassle, but it may stop the same people for rushing all the time.
But I can see why lotto would work as well - I just want my luck to be better on them :o).

"Val's paranoia. Isn't it fun?
You are just insane Val. (Who would be one of the one's out there 12+ hours early)"
I don't pay people to rush for me...LOL. And I have proof since I know the person that does it for him.
"DefyGravity, Whats your obsession with adamgreer? It seems like every time he says something, you have to make a comment or remark. Doesn't it get old?"
He does the same to me and he's the obsessed one.

Didn't they do something similar to this at JERSEY BOYS? I think they would write down everyone's name and check to make sure they hadn't already rushed during that month. Though that was more to stop the scalpers than anything else. NEXT TO NORMAL seems to just have a core group of people going back again and again and again...
It's only unfair if they treat you any differently. Because those (very foolish) people choose to line up early....it is 'fair'. Every has the choice to go in early or not.
I could "complain" that student rush is unfair....I am not a student. I'm a single parent teacher...trust me, not a lot of disposable income. But if STUDENT rush is what the producers choose to do: so be it.

I'm torn when it comes to rush vs. lotto.
I think it's completely RIDICULOUS that people are waiting that long for rush and lotto would be good to control the rush crowds.
But I always lose lotto. Every single lotto. I rarely make it to NYC, and when I do, I usually can't afford regular tickets. And I would only have a few chances to win a lotto until I have to get back home.
I love this show. I saw it a couple of times at Second Stage, many more times at Arena (because I live in DC and never had ANY trouble getting a $10 ticket), and twice on Broadway. I'd like to see Meghann Fahy's take on the role, but this is just crazy. I don't generally do rush unless it is easy, so you would never catch me camping out. In any case, I am happy for the show selling out, but it seems fan creepyness/obsession has reached a whole new level with this show. Not just this incidence, but in general.
Off-topic, but does Next to Normal have any plans for Wednesday matinees?
The show has never done Wednesday matinees. It's not a show for that crowd. They did Wednesday evening before the schedule change.
I don't camp out for anything. I don't sleep on the streets
Ljay, I literally lol-ed, best quote ever and it perfectly sums up my feelings. I don't get camping out, I wouldn't even do it for Meryl Streep or Donna Murphy who are my favorite actresses alive, let alone an unknown understudy for a featured role. These people are F*CKing sick.
Not that I'm saying I would not overnight rush a show, because that time may come, but it must be so weird for the actress to have people wanting to sleep outside to see them - especially liek others have said when they have no Broadway credits.
oh please. stop hating on dedicated fans. the rush is designed for people who don't have enough money to buy a full priced ticket, so instead of giving their money, they give time. if you really can't deal with getting up early that's just too bad. camping out doesn't make you a bum, it's not like your waiting there for days on end not showering. stop being such pansies because people are more dedicated than you.
p.s. maybe someone could actually get back on topic? if i'm correct the show just let out?
whoa...a little harsh, don't ya' think? There was no hate, just incredulousness.
Dedicated? And that's proven by camping out?
A number of folks are saying they just don't get it.
we aren't hating on fans, we're hating on obsessed whackjobs who happen to like the show.
I'm all for fans, i think this show deserves fans, but obsessed whackjobs it doesn't need.
That is BEYOND dedicated, it's f*cked up. YOU ARE SLEEPING ON NEW YORK CITY STREETS! Are these people really retarded? Only people as crazy as them would be there that early, so why do you need to be their that early? I MAY understand 4AM but 4PM is ridiculous even for the most dedicated of fans. Even VAL wouldn't do that for Julie Reiber's final performance in Wicked if they had rush.
sorry if that came off a little harsh, just got home from work lol. i don't actually sleep when i camp out for something i don't actually bring a tent and a sleeping bag and sleep. i bring some friends and some cards, maybe monopoly.
"Only people as crazy as them would be there that early"
you do realize what the show is about right? crazy people. crazy people will obviously be drawn to it. they are crazy, but that's dedication. obviously you guys aren't for it but i love camping out for things with my friends.
She was fantastic. More when I am home. I am on my blackberry right now and bww doesn't load well. But she was wonderful. They finally got an u-s right.
