What was the performance of a song in a Broadway show that you witnessed which had the most overwhelming audience reaction? And how exactly did the audience react?

The audience reaction at the end of Doubt were powerful. The huge gasps were exhilerating.

Bernadette Peters' "Rose's Turn" in Gypsy. The entire audience leaped to their feet--most of them in tears or just visably awestruck--and stayed there for a good couple of minutes.

I second Gypsy w/ Bernadette Peters after "Rose's Turn" there was standing ovation for 3 minutes.

The towel waving reminded me of a Per?nist rally. I kept chanting "Evita!" whenever they'd pan to the crowds. - SM2

Jennifer Holliday's "And I Am Telling You" - people actually ran down the aisles to the edge of the stage. Some of us were standing on our seats, screaming at the top of our lungs. And all of this went on for minutes.

when i saw the wicked tour (ducks and covers) when victoria matlock finished defying gravity there was a huge silence and then a standing ovation after about 5 seconds of sheer awe. Thats the best i've witnessed personally

not witnessed personally- jennifer holliday's "an i am telling you"

No one ran down the aisles when I saw Dreamgirls but I would have to concur with the reaction the audience gave to "And I Am Telling You" It's the only time that I've seen an entire audience in a theatre give a standing ovation in the middle of a song.

At an incredible college production of Sweeney Todd that I saw (three times *cough*) a while back, I was at the closing night performance, and the audience was eating up A Little Priest.

They were laughing their heads off for about two minutes or so at privates joke, and at the end, people were cheering so very loud, and some were even on their feet.

It was an amazing night I'll never forget.

It's not nearly as big as some of the ones posted here, but Allison Fischer's "I Want More" got a HUGE applause.

Most likely because it was the first song in the score that didn't sound exactly like the last.

Aida's "Dance of the Robe". When Deborah Cox hit an amazing note at the end, the audience stood and applause went on for a while. I loved that number.

The 1st time I went to ALL SHOOK UP (when it was still selling 85% capacity) the moment Sharon Wilkins began to finish "There's Always Me" she got people on their feet cheering for her and screaming. Also when they finished "Can't Help Fallin In Love" at the end of ACT 1 people clapped like crazy and screamed.

I've heard the opening night of WICKED- the audience went wild when Idina began to fly in Defying Gravity- it was almost enough to blare out Idina--- so I've heard :wink wink:

From DRS: "The Bushes of Tex were nervous wrecks because thier son was dim! But look what happened to him!" Always gets a HUGE roar!

And basicly all of the Ruprecht song! And after Great Big Stuff!

I wouldn't say they went wild so much as...clapped. They went pretty wild as she finished, though.

Eden Espinosa singing "Once Upon a Time"

Jennifer Holliday "AIATY"

Those are both great spontaneous ovation moments.

One of them won every award possible, the other was passed over for everything.

Oh, yeah. I forgot about that. Quite a few people jumped to their feet after Eden sang "Once Upon a Time" when I saw Brooklyn.

At the RENT 10th anniversary Wilson got quite a reaction just before Today 4 U. He stepped out in that Santa costume and had to delay starting the song for about a minute due to the applause.

"I wrote a book: "How to Be Popular". Now I've put together a top ten list of how to help you: -Elphie, everyday... shower. I mean, who knows? Maybe some of that green is gonna come off! -Deodorant Elphie. No body likes a stinky witch! -I think we've covered the hair, we'll get to that. -Clean underclothes. That's all I'm gonna say. -Look at your posture. That's no way to be popular! -Bed made, room straightened. We've done that. -Colors blended. Oookay. -But the most important thing to have, to make yourself popular, is to keep your beautiful smile." ~Kristin Chenoweth in her last performance of the song "Popular"

Ah, I must concur on the Norbert moons the audience one. That got a big reaction, as did all of Ruprecht and Great Big Stuff. My personal most overwhelming reaction was at the end of Fable, when Patti (I saw it on a Tuesday) sang "Love! Love if you can..." That was excellent!
