I got to see tonight’s performance, my first time seeing this show.
This was a very pleasant return trip to the Nederlander.
Billy Crystal… don’t get me started! But really, he’s everything I expected from him and so much more.
I also loved both Shoshana and Chasten. Can they respectively replace Feldstein in Funny Girl and Scott in Company, please, when the time is right?
This feels like a complete 180 compared to JRB’s other works, good to know there’s another side of him that’s just as effective. Rando’s direction is also rock solid.
My only qualms with Mr. Saturday Night were the rather-empty orchestrations (adding a few reeds could have done the trick), and both Graff and Paymer’s subpar performances. Graff reminded me a lot of Julie Halston in Tootsie for some reason.
The show clearly caters to the Crystal diehards and the Tootsie demographic who flocked to see that one. As long as Crystal plays Buddy Young Jr., Mr. Saturday Night will surely “stick around” on Broadway.
